tenderheaded. a memoir @simonbooks is now out in paperback! It was celebrated with an intimate Salon of special friends. The most vulnerable reading & discussion of the book thus far. I’m grateful for every sale, more so if bought at a Black book store. I’ll post some suggestions over the next few, for today 👉🏼 In LA: @eso_won_books In ATL: @medubookstoreatl In KY @wildfigbooksandcoffee In NYC @sistersuptown In Phila @unclebobbies In BX @thelitbar 🍂📕🤎

Founded by Marc Lamont Hill, Uncle Bobbie’s bookstore and cafe provides a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere✨

They have a plentiful selection of books which are of course organized by genre. So definitely give yourself enough time to browse ☺️

Their cafe serves regular cafe drinks such as coffee, tea, hot chocolate, lemonade and more. Bites include bagels, croissants, vegan brownies, and danishes✨

Definitely a great place to slow down a bit and catch a good read 📚☺️

I will be back 💕

This was a big weekend - not just for me, but my entire team!

I had the privilege of meeting young people from all over our city and I am so proud to see all the learning, advocacy, and leadership coming out of our next generation.

And this week, I finally held my small business hearing! I am grateful to everyone who came to testify. Your voices matter and we are going through everything that was said, so we can offer tangible solutions.

Lastly, shout out to Team Nina for all your work representing me across the city.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Philadelphia!

Ok, real talk, horror isn't usually our lane. 👀

But while we kept digging into different Black voices and genres, we found this deep, rich presence of Black authors in horror that we had no idea existed. We were even surprised to see a couple of familiar writers with stories in this genre. Writers holding Bram Stoker Awards, Nebula Awards, and NAACP Image Award nods. Names that deserve way more shelf space than they get.

We even brought in Aisha, our AI research assistant, to help us track down authors and verify their work. What we found became the start of our new Black Horror Book List. Stories that turn fear into history, resistance, and survival. And in time for those of you who enjoy a good scare during spooky season.

Think Southern Gothic conjure traditions. Lovecraftian reclamation. Supernatural reckonings with America's past. This list holds authors with real literary weight behind them.

Visit our Rooted Narratives Bookshop. We're a proud affiliate of bookshop.org, and every purchase you make supports independent bookstores across the country while keeping our platform rooted in this work.

This list is just getting started, and we know there's so much more out there. Drop your favorite Black horror authors and books in the comments. Help us grow this list with you.

Book 51 (personal collection)
Wild Girls: How the Outdoors Shaped the Women Who Challenged a Nation by Toya Miles
Norton Publishing

This nonfiction work tells the story of famous women of the 19th and 20th centuries, who were raised and yearned for the outdoors.

The women featured are Harriet Tubman, Louisa May Alcott, Sacagawea, Zitkala-Sa, Octavia Butler, and the Indigenous girls basketball team of Fort Shaw.

Each woman had a mark on the history of America. The woods, the plains, the waterways, and even the an outdoor basketball court, helped strengthen these women to who they became.

This was an informative read and I learned some things about each woman that was featured. I picked this book up at a great bookstore in Germantown, PA @unclebobbies

🔥 PHILLY, THE STORY ISN’T OVER! 🔥

CAUGHT IN THE LIFE — BOOKS 1 & 2 📚
Before the next chapter begins, you need to know where it all started.

I wrote Caught in the Life while incarcerated, turning my imagination, experiences, and passion for storytelling into a published novel.

Now I’m bringing that story back to readers — and preparing to introduce CAUGHT IN THE LIFE 2.

📖 BOOK 1 — AVAILABLE NOW
📖 BOOK 2 — COMING SOON | PRESALE DETAILS TO BE ANNOUNCED
Two books. One continuing story. A Philly classic by Tez.

… because they did. It’s the exposure to different places, pathways of thoughts, historical and scientific content…. All of it. So to consume them first, have the ability to intellectually process them, and then the gift to write them….💋 Books have been a blessing on a blessing on a blessing #authornicolebaileywilliams #teachersbudget #thebookandthelook #authoreducator #books
