The Balearic Barndance returns to the Lido on Sat 24th Oct for it’s quarterly run-out and its 1 Year Anniversary!

Channelling the freewheelin ethos of the ‘balearic’ sound & style, the Mt Pleasant dance den will be guided through a hay-bale of oddball disco, Caribbean window-steamers, globe-trotting funk, dubby dynamite and soulful sweaters.

The Balearic Barndance is a high energy space for communal dancing—opening it’s arms to leftfield chinstrokers, two-left-feeters and curious passersby alike.

It’s oft been said that “a James in the hand is worth two in the booth”, so with him away for this shindig we’ve called up two able stablemates and friends of the show:
Body Double & Mr Merlot. You’re in safe hands.

The dance kicks off at 9pm and stampedes on til the crows come home. No cover, no jabronis, no problem...

Made the most of a brief staycation back home, and rare time to be back out there 🍁⚽️🌪️

Hello! I've broken virtual containment and am climbing into the saddle with one of my favourite local disc slingers @how__to to play for you some Earth rhythms at the @thegardenstrathcona this coming Saturday from 6-11pm. 2025 was wild. For me, it contained neither my lowest lows nor my highest highs. But more than any prior year, 2025 held the most rapid & extreme oscillations between very high & very low points: between moments where everything was falling into place & where everything was falling apart.

Three months ago it definitely felt like everything was falling apart. I was going through an acrimonious break-up, dealing with an emergent hernia, & faced with a nightmare choice between keeping my dream job in a place that makes me miserable or moving back to Vancouver & potentially going back into a punishing job market. Facing an uncertain future, an enshittified body, & a lonely everyday life in Kamloops, I was unhappy.

But looking back at the end of the year, such low points aren’t the most compelling or resonant parts of the story for me. In 2025 I played more shows than I have in probably the last five years combined - including some of the best I’ve ever played. I overcame some prominent antagonists in my professional life, where I learned that I’ve developed a reputation for ferocity and skillfulness. I set several personal strength records. I learned new skills about how to live more comfortably with the black dog. I reconnected with somedear friends after long absences, strengthened some of my most important friendships, & met more cool & interesting people than I have in any other past year.

Looking ahead to an imminent 40th birthday, hernia surgery, & another big life transition, I’m feeling optimistic. In 2025 I learned how to live with some pretty major contradictions & intense pressures. The road has been rocky, but I’ve still got lots of gas in the tank. Thank to everyone who has made the journey worth it: let’s keep driving this mfer until the wheels fall off.

I'll be bringing an eclectic selection of Fred Again etc to please all the Fred Again fans 🥳 and wallow in some drum & bass (cuz Fred Again reps d&b too), inspired by a recent trip to Toronto. Hope you can join us for a fun Sunday afternoon/evening — and you can still be in bed by 10pm!

Hello! Big shout out to @mainstreetdanceauthority for a wonderful friday evening in a big room style, truly dragged my ass out of my usual reserved self and ironed me out properly! If you have a will, they have a way!

Today on the program its just you and me and a couple bags of records. I had a lovely time playing at a banging new spot in Victoria @softer.drink to celebrate two of my deepest loves on planet E venturing into a new chapter. The bevs flowed and the tunes were bubbly. I decided that we'll take some of those new sounds for a spin along with the usual array of classics and left field freak outs.

As always, tune in at @bsidedotradio, chat me up on Twitch, come down and give me a hard time if you want. Or just wish me nothing but love! The choice is yours, use it or lose it as they say.
