At Carolina Performing Arts, visiting artists build relationships across campus through performance, student engagement, and conversation. We work with artists whose command of their craft is matched by a commitment to sharing their knowledge and engaging with students and the wider community.

During Grammy-winning soprano Renée Fleming’s visit, those relationships took two forms. Earlier that day at Moeser Auditorium, Fleming coached four voice students from the Department of Music one-on-one during a public clinic—a rare opportunity to learn directly from her. At Memorial Hall, she brought Music and Mind, her national program exploring music’s relationship to health and well-being, to campus. Art and culture journalist Liza Roberts moderated the conversation, which brought Fleming together with UNC School of Medicine experts Flavio Frohlich, Laura C. Hanson, and Patrick J. Smith. The event was presented in partnership with the School of Medicine.

More than 600 people attended across the two events, engaging with music’s connections to expression, health, and well-being. Together, these events are one example of how Carolina Performing Arts brings visiting artists into meaningful exchange with students, campus experts, and the wider community at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make these exchanges possible. Wonder belongs to everyone.

Just one month in, we’re making music together and I’m already hearing these cellists reaching for depth and expression, even as they juggle full course loads elsewhere. Love their energy and curiosity. What a joy to work with this bunch!

Thank you, @danieljgerhardt who took pics. 🙏🧡
