"My parents are from Ecuador. They immigrated to the United States in the late ’50s and early ’60s to California, where I’m from. ... I wanted to study and research this topic as a way to say, people from Latin America have been here in the US literally since 1783 or even before. And I’m not talking about the Southwest either, because that’s obvious, through the 19th century, becoming a part of the United States, but I’m talking about Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, of course, Boston, and even in the South."

Professor David Garcia recently joined the Institute for the Arts and Humanities’ podcast, The Institute, to share his research and his current project, Border Crossings: Latin U.S. History We Weren’t Taught. Listen to the full episode or read the transcript on our website. (link in bio)

“When I got the email that we were going to go to Ireland, it was like passion reignited. I got my old books of Irish jigs, and I tried to relearn all of them. And I was on Irish music forums and commenting on Reddit posts, and I was really trying to find what I was going to do and how I was going to play the most Irish music possible.”

In August, sophomore music major Katherine Thomas and her Carolina Bluegrass bandmates played in Ireland, like the Tar Heel football and women’s soccer teams. As someone with Irish ancestry who grew up playing Irish fiddle tunes, the chance to travel to Ireland was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The interplay between Irish jigs and American folk songs — particularly songs of the American South — is one that Thomas finds fascinating, and she’s used Carolina’s deep archival reservoir of Southern art and folklore to study that connection. Read more about Thomas' experience in “Fiddler’s dreams come full circle in Dublin.” (link in bio)

For most undergraduates, Spring Commencement marks the end of their journey at Carolina. For two Tar Heel musicians, it simply marked the end of a chapter. This year, Camilla Fratta and Ernest Johnson begin their graduate school careers at UNC in public health and dentistry, respectively.

Join faculty and graduate students for the UNC Music Research Forum this Friday, featuring guest lecturer Dr. Dave Fossum from Arizona State University. His talk, “What’s an Arrangement Worth?: Copyright, Folk Music, and the Value of Creativity in Turkey,” links implicit criteria of creative value to a larger history of nation-building. “The launching point for my inquiry is a policy of Turkey’s copyright collecting societies, who long offered arrangers of public domain folk music only a 10% royalty on their arrangements (whereas a 100% royalty is common in most jurisdictions),” wrote Dr. Fossum.

Make it a Sunday Funday with Dr. Jessica Kunttu’s faculty recital at 3:00 pm in Moeser Auditorium! The recital features the music of Gernot Wolfgang and Amanda Harberg, with performances by bassoonist Dr. Kunttu, pianist Ināra Zandmane, flutist Dr. Kelariz Keshavarz, horn player Russell Rybicki, and double bassist Zachary Hobin. And don’t miss the special performance by UNC bassoonists Marni Weinreb, Sam Brunetz, and Reed Luper! by @uncmusic
