EVS faculty Dr. Kgosietsile Velempini and his PhD candidate from the University of Botswana presented a research poster titled “Waste management knowledge transmission in Molepolole village, Botswana” at the 2026 North American Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE) conference recently in Portland, Oregon. The research poster presentation is based on Isabella Ntsabane’s PhD research work in Molepolole village, Botswana. Part of this poster presentation is also published in the following journal article: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s42532-024-00207-8” Dr. Velempini also had the opportunity to share his community action project as part of the NAAEE’s Civics and Environmental Education Fellowship. The ongoing community project is titled ‘Community engagement on civic science for water quality in the Cape Fear River Basin of North Carolina: A case study in Dublin, Bladen County’. We greatly appreciate the support from UNCW and NAAEE in our EVS research endeavors! #uncwevs #createsoarexplore #environmentalsciences #NAAEE

EOS had a great day of outreach in the Wilmington community! The Department table was a popular stop today at the Center for Marine Science (CMS) open house and at Seahawk Saturday in Trask Coliseum. Folks who stopped by learned and asked questions about EOS courses and degree programs, research, field experiences, and post-grad job opportunities. Some of the instruments used in field methods in oceanography (OCN 390) and cruise techniques (OCN 471), which are two of the upper-level oceanography elective courses in the major. From left to right: Secchi Disk, Multi-parameter Sonde, Plankton Net, and a sonar technology called CHIRP. EOS had a great day of outreach in the Wilmington community!
