OT vs. PT… because apparently we needed to settle some very important internet challenges. 😂
When our faculty aren’t teaching the next generation of healthcare professionals, they’re busy putting their skills to the test with a little friendly competition.

Different professions, different perspectives, same goal: helping people move, participate, and thrive.
And sometimes, that looks like questionable challenges, plenty of laughs, and a little OT vs. PT rivalry in the office.
Because learning is serious… but having fun together is part of the job, too!

Who do you think took the win? 👀

The next generation of @und_otd and @und_pt students are here!

This morning, dozens of incoming students in both programs were welcomed to the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences for their orientation. They began by day by taking their first professional head shots and with their respective "Adopt-A-Student" programs.

Then for the first time the two programs combined during orientation for a scavenger hunt within the School and across the @uofnorthdakota campus, setting the expectation of interprofessionalism on day one.

Please join us in welcoming these future Occupational and Physical Therapists to SMHS!

🎓Doctor of Physical Therapy🩺

Words cannot describe the level of gratitude I have for everyone who helped me get to this point in my life. Thank you to all my friends, family, and faculty at UND who pushed me and made this place so hard to say goodbye to.

Leaving campus, I never thought I’d hope to hit every red light on the drive out, but this place will forever be a part of me. From moving here with all my high school friends, to meeting some of the best people in my life, getting accepted into grad school, being voted most likely to fall asleep at the med school, and finally graduating - I’ll hold onto these memories forever.

I can’t wait to start living my dream. I recently passed my board exam and accepted a position at Foothills Sports Medicine Physical Therapy, where I’ll be starting my career in outpatient orthopedics.

UND Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology students came together for an interdisciplinary experience focused on our youngest population, children under the age of three. Working as a team, students practiced developmental assessment skills while learning how each profession contributes unique expertise to support early childhood growth.
This hands-on experience highlighted the power of collaboration in pediatric care. By sharing perspectives and working side by side, student strengthen their understanding of how ot, pt, and speech professionals can coordinate care to support communication, movement, play, and overall development.

Wrapped up my neuro outpatient rotation at PAM today, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I had the privilege of learning from one of the most skilled, creative, and genuinely patient-centered clinicians out there — Ali 1.0. I’m so grateful for the knowledge she poured into me, the way she encouraged me to think outside the box, and the friendship and laughter we shared every day. I’m leaving this rotation feeling inspired and excited to keep growing as a clinician. ✨

And a bonus highlight: getting to see my friend Dana at PAM every day while she completed her neuro inpatient rotation. Pretty surreal to look back on our PT school days and realize we’ve gone from studying side-by-side in the classroom to managing full caseloads of neuro patients under the same roof. So proud of us. 💙

Some of our OT faculty, PT faculty, and a PT alumni took the stage with the UND Hawks in Harmony choir and they were incredible.
Their performance was beautiful and we're so proud to see them sharing their talents with the UND community.

🦶Did I Just Tear My Achilles?🦶

🆘That moment in a game or doing something active, where you feel a pop and turn around to grab your calf, wondering who threw a rock at you or shot you with a BB gun.

🆘😩Then you realize that no one is back there and probably something else happened. That pain in your calf and is really difficult to push off the ground and push your heel up into the air.

💯If you completely tore your Achilles tendon, which this is a common description of, the Thompson test is a sensitive and reliable test for complete ruptures.

As you can see in the video when we put the patient in prone and he is stabilized on the table, when we squeeze his calf, we should see normal plantarflexion of the ankle or the toes point and then return to the resting position.

🆘When we test the injured side and squeeze the calf, we no movement of the ankle at all. It just hangs their flat and flaccid. Also when we palpate his lower calf into his calcaneus, there is a big gap and divot.

The Thompson test is a quick and reliable test for complete ruptures. You may get a false negative with partial tears where there is enough Achilles attached where we get plantar flexion at the ankle when the calf is squeezed and in those cases, diagnostic imaging will complete the differential diagnosis.

The next step is to get to a foot ankle specialist as they are both surgical and non-surgical options, but both are only available if they receive immediate care.

The video gives you a good idea of what to do if one of these patients walks into your clinic and is a great visual of a positive Achilles rupture test .

Teamwork makes the (healthcare) dream work! 💚

First-semester nursing students joined forces with second-year Physical Therapy students in N300 Foundations lab to learn about mobility aids, range-of-motion (ROM) exercises, and gained a deeper understanding of how collaboration supports better patient outcomes.

Future healthcare teams in action! 🤝🩺 UND students from across health disciplines from both the CNPD and SMHS collaborated in unique interprofessional care conference simulations.

Experiences like this give UND students a unique opportunity to practice teamwork and problem-solving in realistic clinical scenarios.
