🚨 Special Project Reveal! 🚨

For the past year I've been working on a semi-secret project, and the time has finally come to unveil it in all its *slightly off-topic* glory. I'm excited to announce that I'm launching...

Underdog Photo Studio, a pet portrait photography studio!

No this is not a joke, though my bank account wishes it was.

Does it mean I'm quitting underwater photography? No! After I left marine science last year, I struggled to find the balance of stability and flexibility needed to keep the conservation photography dream alive. Not cut out for doing photo tours and courses, I decided to take a different tack and combine my love of photography and animals to launch a pet portrait studio. Whether I've completely lost my mind remains to be seen.

I know you all are signed up for fish pics so don't worry - this is the first and last time I'll bring it up here, and I'll delete this later so it doesn't contaminate your saltwater experience. But if you'd like to be on the receiving end of as many fluffy pixels as you can handle, you can follow this detour at @underdogpawtraits

I'm expecting the studio to continue keeping me high and dry as I get it off the ground, but the goal is to return to the depths with renewed stability, flexibility, and - most of all - hope for conservation work. Thanks for following along through the dry spell!

Check out these amazing photos taken yesterday by @underdogpawtraits of adoptable dogs Rosie, Robin, Sammy and Eventually. A big thank you to photographer Kate🙏🐶🐾

The good news is later in the day Eventually was adopted and went home with new family which includes another pup his size and nearly the same coloring.

Rosie - This 5-year-old gal has been such a good sport in the short time she has been here. She was surrendered to the Shelter due to the owner having life changes. She has experience with kids and dogs, LOVES attention and is sweet as strawberries- her favorite snack🍓

Robin is a 10-week-old border collie female and has such a sweet and gentle nature about her. And is so smart! She is already learning “sit”.

Meet Sammy! This 3-year-old goofy wiggle butt of a dog is looking to warm her way right into your heart. Stranger? Not sure Sammy has ever heard of one. This social butterfly has experience with dogs but is looking for the right match. If there is a resident dog in the home, some speed dating at the Shelter would be best prior to adoption. Sammy isn’t only personality and looks – this girl has brains! She knows “sit”, “stay”, “lay down”, “roll over”, “shake”. This girl may have a few other tricks up her sleeve but that is for her adopter to learn with her through positive reinforcement based training! A home free of small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, cats) and chickens is required. If you are looking for an active girl to adventure with you – consider meeting Sammy today!

The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is open from 11am to 6pm every day and located at 1001 Rodriguez Street at the corner of 7th Avenue in Santa Cruz. Our telephone number is 831-454-7200. Last meet and greet ends at 4:30 pm. Visit our website at scanimalshelter.org or click on link in Bio.

Meet Boomer, the big boy of a Shepherd!

Boomer has a history living with children, teens, men, women and seniors! His favorite activities are going for walks and playing tug of war. Boomer had some dog friends in his previous home that he enjoyed interacting with and has shown some interest in befriending dogs since entering the Shelter. A home with a canine companion may be a fit after some “speed dating” prior to adoption.

Boomer’s adoption fee is sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation thanks to “Leave No One Behind fund” – designed to adopter’s eyes towards animals who have been in the Shelter’s care a little longer than average waiting for the right adopter.

Plus the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation now provides a training voucher (Pawsitivity Bucks) to help adopters get started with certified positive trainers in our area.

Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
