What a SPOOKTACULAR night at Charleston Film Network! Last night’s Spooky Monthly Screener Club brought together local filmmakers, film lovers, and some seriously impressive costumes for an evening of independent cinema, creativity, and community. Things are getting spooky at Charleston Film Network. Join us Monday, October 19 at the Park Circle Community Center for our October Screamer Club — a night of local short films, filmmaker conversations, food trucks, networking, and a little Halloween spirit. Doors open at 6 PM, with the first hour set aside to grab food, meet other local creatives, and hang out before the screenings begin. Come in costume, wear something cozy, or bring a blanket and settle in for the night. The event is free, but registration is required. Our Screamer-worthy film lineup will be announced soon. Join us Friday, October 23 at Tin Roof Charleston for the inaugural Cosmic Culture Club, a queer prioritized night of film, live performance, music, costumes, raffle prizes, and dancing. 🎬 WHAT A NIGHT, CHARLESTON! Our latest Charleston Film Network Screener Club was a huge success, and we couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who showed up to support local film. We packed the evening with three locally made shorts — What a Beautiful Wedding, I’ll Take Care of You, and Sealed with a Kiss — followed by conversations with the filmmakers themselves. But just as important as what happened on screen was what happened around it: filmmakers meeting filmmakers, new connections being made, conversations continuing between screenings, and our community showing up for each other. A huge thank-you to Michael Smallwood, Taiyen Stevenson, and Zachary W. Weaver for sharing their work and giving us a look behind the scenes during our Q&As. Special thanks to Ann Simmons and Park Circle Community Center for helping us create a home for this event, and to Butter Chicken, Da Kajun Xpress, and Sweet Butt Not So Sweet for keeping everyone fed throughout the night! Normally I don’t enter design contests, but the theme was “The Power of Storytelling” and how it moves us through the ages. I didn’t think I had enough time, but then I had to remind myself of how much time I’ve already stored away drawing all over the city. I was able to take multiple sketches I’ve drawn of real life people I’ve met in Charleston and transmute them into something bigger which I feel embodies this theme pretty well. I drew inspiration from multiple time lines but tried to keep the design classic and timeless to fit any era. Storytelling is all about drawing from your own real experiences and retelling them in relatable ways, and that’s why the art you make, the songs you write, and the pictures you take all have an element of soul in them that cannot be recreated. There is still time to enter the contest for @unflappable_studios . Submissions end September 30th and the winner is announced October 1st!
