A backyard shed in Hancock Park, modeled after the Unabomber’s cabin. That’s where Amoako Boafo painted before his auction record crossed $3M.

For over a decade, Danny First has quietly funded artist residencies out of his own home: flights, materials, room, board, even laundry, for names now selling at Christie’s and Sotheby’s. No panel review or institutional backing. Just an eye that keeps getting proven right before the market catches up.

The amazing studio visit with Tunji Adeniyi-Jones (@tunjiaj ), a prominent British-Nigerian contemporary painter celebrated for his vibrant, stylized figurative abstractions. His oeuvre synthesizes West African mythology, the Black diasporic experience, and Western art historical canons. Operating within a self-defined conceptual framework of cultural addition, combination, and collaboration, Adeniyi-Jones captures the kinetic fluidity of Black bodies suspended within shallow, highly saturated pictorial fields.

His practice establishes a fluid dialogue between European modernism and pioneering Black artistic movements. Specifically, he converges the paper cut-outs of Henri Matisse and the structural planes of Cubism with the rhythmic silhouettes of Harlem Renaissance master Aaron Douglas. Furthermore, his work aligns with the flowing lineages of Nigerian modernists, most notably Ben Enwonwu.

Drawing extensively from his Yoruba heritage, Adeniyi-Jones integrates West African sculptural iconography into contemporary canvases. Recurrent motifs include Benin bronze heads, traditional facial scarification , and imagined deities and spirits.
Reflecting a personal biography spent across London, New York, and West Africa, his paintings serve as sites of cultural pluralism. The direct, almond-shaped gaze of his subjects frequently invokes W.E.B. Du Bois’s sociological concept of double consciousness, illustrating the tension between internal Black identity and the external, other gaze of Western society.

The figures in his paintings are frequently entangled with lush foliage and swirling, non-representational patterns. These decorative elements are informed by a diverse array of sources, including West African literature, batik textiles, and European ornamentation.
In his recent stylistic evolution, Adeniyi-Jones has begun rotating his canvases during production. This technique dismantles conventional gravitational anchors and eliminates traditional foreground-background distinctions. As a result, the figures increasingly dissolve into pure, chromatic energy.

Special thanks to @unfram_d!!

Saw it at Night Gallery in LA and knew immediately. Mira Dancy, No Crease or Fold Untouched (Janes Village), 2026 — oil landscapes made in the year after the Eaton Fire, walking the same burned land every day. You can feel it in every mark. It's on the wall now.

Thanks @unfram_d

New work we’re excited about: Exhale (2026) by @marssingleton, from the show at @nightgallery in LA.
Jordan saw it there before we did and sent back a note about that heavy yellow sky and the tiny purple dot your eye keeps circling back to.
We wrote a short piece about it on Substack – link in bio.

Thanks @unfram_d for your eye ;-)

New flower paintings from The Cabin LA residency.

We were really taken with this piece by @eliyahuharkham – bold brushwork, almost a Van Gogh energy to it.
Just shared a longer Substack piece about his work and how it found its way to us – link in bio.

Thanks @unfram_d for the tip :-)
and @danny.first for his amazing patronage

Unlike many art advisors, Prisca Pan (@Unfram_d) puts strategy and finance at the center of her advisory practice. She helps her clients think about collecting art as an asset class, while building collections that reflect culture and personal taste.

As someone whose day job deals with finance and alternative assets, I often struggle to reconcile art’s cultural role with the pragmatic, value-driven logic inherent to investing.

In this episode, Prisca and I explore the nuanced tension between art as culture and art as an investment.

Ludovic Nkoth, joining the collection.
A café, a red table, figures looking back at us with the kind of presence you can’t fake. We’ve been thinking about this one for weeks, and feel lucky to be its custodians.
