⛰️Our second forest bathing experience with @nepassage brought us to the summit of Mount Agamenticus in York, ME.

Using adaptive hiking equipment, participants of all abilities explored the mountain trail and took in panoramic views of the White Mountains and the ocean.

We explored our surroundings using our senses, listened to beautiful songs of the birds, breathed in the scent of sweet fern, and foraged sun-warmed berries along the path. As the sun dipped lower in the sky, we gathered for a peaceful tea ceremony with golden light at our backs. A beautiful reminder that nature welcomes everyone. 🌿🫐☀️

Meet our third featured Winant Fellow:
Connor Downs, another Recreation Management & Policy major, is serving as Assistant Director at the Tapply-Thompson Community Center. Connor has been combining his passions for recreation and public service at the Community Center for a few years now, and his move to Assistant Director couldn’t have come at a better time. “It basically all worked out that this year would be my assistant director year, but also my internship for junior summer, so it worked out perfectly.”

Connor sees this as his opportunity to give back to the system that he grew up in, having taken part in various public rec programs as a kid. As assistant director, he gets to focus on the management and planning of the summer program, working alongside Center leadership.

“It’s a very prestigious honor, and I take it very graciously because it’s giving me an opportunity to be rewarded for doing something I love,” Connor explained.

Meet our second featured Winant Fellow:
Jonathan Bean, a Recreation Management & Policy major, is working with Northeast Passage to make recreation opportunities accessible to people with disabilities. Jonathan is a program manager responsible for planning and leading adaptive outdoor programs.

His passion for building community health and strength led him to join Northeast Passage some years ago. “Their mission statement’s about building healthy lifestyles and improving access to recreation opportunities. So for me to be a part of that, I think, is huge.”

In addition to a stipend, the Fellowship also counts towards Jonathan’s academic requirements, allowing him to graduate a semester early and get a jumpstart on his career.

Jonathan hopes the words of John Winant will help guide him this summer. “Doing the day’s work, day by day, doing a little, adding a little, broadening our bases, wanting not only for ourselves but for others also, a fairer chance for all people everywhere.”

❄️🥾🌲Walk one of my favorite local trails after a snow storm with me: Doe Farm. There is about .2 miles of trail that follows the train tracks and one happened to come through, blowing all the lovely fresh snow into the air. The forest was absolutely magical with all the snow clung onto the branches! 🤩 I have planned my Spring Equinox walk for March 22 here, and I’m wondering if it’ll be as snowy as it is now with all the storms we’ve had.
.
📚Doe Farm is 87 acres of conservation land bequeathed to the town by Olinthus N. Doe upon his death in 1909. The Doe family once used this property to tan leather which involved soaking the hides for many months with hemlock, spruce, or oak bark. The property’s 3,000 feet of shoreline helps protect the water quality of the Wild & Scenic Lamprey River.

☀️🌲🌕Sunday after our full moon was a beautiful morning for a forest bathing experience. It’s a good time to let go of what no longer serves you, go inward to recharge, and water the seeds of what brings you joy and peace going into the colder and darker season.

🌲 Outdoor Recreation Boosts Rural Growth & STEM Learning 🌲

New research shows outdoor activities can engage rural youth from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds in STEM and open doors to new career pathways. In New Hampshire, this approach can help revitalize communities impacted by declining extractive industries, supporting a sustainable outdoor economy while preparing the local workforce for future development.
