Working full-time isn’t enough for nearly half of Rhode Island households.

A new report from United Way of Rhode Island and United For ALICE found that 43% of RI households couldn’t afford the basic cost of living in 2024. Many are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE) families: working households that earn above the poverty line but still can’t cover essentials like housing, childcare, and food. Because most assistance programs use the federal poverty level to decide who qualifies, these families often fall through the cracks, left choosing between a utility bill and a full gas tank.

In our latest newsletter, we break down what it really costs to live here, including why a family of four needed $111,000 just to cover the basics.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for a screening of No Country for Mothers, a documentary film by Reshma Saujani of @momsfirstus, at the @rwpbotanicalcenter (screened with the help of @pvdfilmfestival)!

We were joined by Denise Meza-Mathews from @unitedwayri, Paige Parks from @rikidscount, and Clarissa Hernandez from @collectiveactionri, who answered questions and talked about the work they do for moms and families in Rhode Island. We hope folks left feeling inspired!

Our senior leaders Brittany Pruitt Fletcher and David Mercado represented our information and referral program NC 211 at the latest 211 THRIVE Conference in Alexandria, VA.

They got to network with other 211 leaders around the country and discuss ways to strengthen and expand the program. In one of the panel sessions, David sat down with members from United Way, United Way of the Midlands, and United Way of Rhode Island on how to maximize resources like staff, technology, and data trends for greater impact and support of consumers utilizing the 211 program.

It was a privilege to promote and showcase our powerful NC 211 service and the incredible staff members who make NC 211 possible. We look forward to growing our capacity and offerings as we keep moving toward the future!

NC 211 is an information and referral program that is free, 24/7, confidential, and multilingual. North Carolinians can dial 2-1-1 or (888) 892-1162 or visit NC211.org to search for resources that may meet their basic needs like utilities, housing, food, healthcare, and more.

What an incredible honor to be part of 100 years of United Way of Rhode Island. 💙💛

I’m truly grateful to have been part of this historic Centennial Celebration at WaterFire Providence. To witness the stories, the people, and the emotions behind a century of impact—and to have the opportunity to capture and share those emotions through @jferrerashow —means more to me than I can put into words.

This wasn’t just about celebrating 100 years. It was about documenting a moment in Rhode Island history that future generations will be able to look back on and understand the people, passion, and community that made it possible.

Thank you, United Way of Rhode Island, @unitedwayri for trusting me and giving my show the opportunity to help tell this story. Here’s to honoring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring the next 100 years. 🙏🏽🎥💙

❤️ What an incredible night at WaterFire Providence! 🔥✨

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who stopped by the ExcEL table on October 17 to say hello, share some love, and talk with us about the vital role multilingual educators play in Rhode Island's schools and communities!

We loved connecting with so many people who share our passion for supporting teachers, celebrating multilingual learners, and creating opportunities for every student to thrive. 🌎📚

Didn't get a chance to stop by? We'd still love to connect! Whether you're an educator, community partner, or simply someone who believes in the power of great teachers, we'd love to hear from you. Reach out, learn about our programs, explore ways to collaborate, or join us in supporting multilingual learners across Rhode Island. Send us a message or visit excelleadershipacademy.org — let's keep the conversation going! 💙

Special thanks to United Way of Rhode Island for sponsoring this wonderful evening and bringing our community together!

Celebrating 100 years of United Way of Rhode Island reminds us of the profound responsibility that comes with carrying a legacy built to empower future generations.

Holding a title carries that same call to service—stewarding a name and a platform that brings people together, honors where we’ve been, and lights the way for who comes next.
