In the close of summer, we invite you to join us in the UNIT/PITT garden to reminisce and recenter in time together 🌀🐛

Reminisce via sun printing: We’ll harness the power of the sun to make anthotype prints using a turmeric-based solution and sunlight 🌼 Gather flowers, leaves, and herbs from the garden or bring your own items that are emblematic of this summer—or nostalgic of summers past—to create prints with :- ) We encourage you to experiment and we recommend bringing items with interesting shapes or varying degrees of translucency for best results. ✨

Recenter via writing: Thinking toward the seasons ahead, Chantal (@flowingfawn) and the team will guide an optional writing exercise on what we’d like to bring forward from this summer; letters to self, notes of gratitude and memories. There will be a few typewriters at the event, generously provided by Chantal, so you can type your piece and take it home with you 💟

Light snacks and tea will be provided 🍵🌱
We welcome you to bring snacks to share if you can!

date: sunday, aug 23
time: 2-5pm ➡️ please come on time so we can start all together :- )
place: UNIT/PITT 2954 West 4th Ave
price: freee! with an option to donate to future events!

Please RSVP through the link in the bio so we know how many people are coming and so you can understand our community guidelines! <3

If you can’t make it this time, not to worry! hotmothertruckers hangouts is a monthly series with an event taking place every 4th weekend of the month 🌱

Patterns and connections from the summer so far, and some snippets of works that didn’t make the final cut. The process of making was enjoyable nonetheless. And me at the pond which reinvigorated my spirits!

I’ve been settling into a new artistic process after grad school and it’s been nice to breathe a little through the medium of watercolour.

Some updates:
- painting a mural with the folks at @aloeraccs this summer on Granville Island
- appearing in a few shows that open in August… more details soon
- enjoying illustration again with a refreshed painterly process. I’ve always been a fan for analogue textures!

- and more to come! 🩷

This piece began as a canvas of confusion.

Every color represents something I’ve carried: memories, emotions, victories, mistakes, fears, desires, attachments. None of them good or bad. Just experiences. Just life.

As I painted, I imagined placing parts of myself onto the canvas—the thoughts, feelings, and stories that shaped my sense of self.

Before the paint came the grid.

Masking tape mapped the surface with boundaries, much like the lines we draw around identity: beliefs, expectations, limitations, and labels. The forms we inherit and the ones we create.

Then came the color.

Paint spread across those taped edges, like experience accumulating over the structures I had marked for myself.

And finally, the peeling.

Removing the tape reveals the space that existed beneath the layers all along—a letting go of definitions and attachments that once seemed fixed.

The colors remain. The textures remain. The brushstrokes remain.

Yet when you step back, something else emerges.

A composition.

A reminder that every color, boundary, and layer belongs to a larger whole.

And beneath it all, the canvas is still there.

In the end, perhaps we’re not meant to mistake the paint for the canvas itself. Perhaps we’re here to explore each color, create with it, and then let it go.

Peel back the tape
See what the layers reveal.
Begin with the canvas again.

Hi fellow animals, anata laylay here🪽

On March 7th, Noelle Lee and George Zheng Berking held their Slow Social Club event at UNIT/PITT. The afternoon was spent making mobiles out of bamboo sticks, preserved flowers, rocks, fish leather wings, and personal items. These items were a look into our relationships and responsibilities to each other and the land.

It was wonderful to learn more about Noelle & George’s practice and watch folks carefully balance each level of their mobile.

Thank you to our friends at UNIT/PITT for hosting us!

Image Descriptions:
Slide 1: A group photo of the participants holding their mobiles
Slide 2: Noelle helping figure out balance on a mobile
Slide 3: A participant checking if their mobile is balanced
Slide 4: Folks working on their piece
Slide 5: Hands putting together a level
Slide 6: An example mobile
Slide 7: Materials for making a mobile
