Batik workshop with Merantau Arts Collective

—October 3 & 17, 10am - 1pm & 2 - 5pm
—2954 West 4th Ave
—Sliding scale $25-45
—Materials provided, take home what you make!

The Merantau Arts Collective invites you to learn about batik-making as a form of artistic, spiritual, and material investigation. Through hands-on guidance, participants will learn the basics of the dying and mark making process while considering how fabric can be used as a form of storytelling, and how the practice connects to land, culture, and tradition, inseparable from the philosophy that guides the making.

This introductory-level workshop will walk you through the basics of batik-making, and the use of canting, a traditional pen-like tool used to design batik tulis or "handwritten" batik. Participants will dye a small 9" square with natural indigo and will be guided through the wax removal process.

All tools and materials generously provided by The Batik Library, and participants are welcome to take home their project at the end of the session.

Free admission is available for First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

RSVP via link in bio. Please note that there are two slots available per date. Be sure to double check the correct date and time when booking!

Accessibility information available at unitpitt.ca/about. Please email info@unitpitt.ca if you have accessibility requirements, or if price is a barrier.

Mother Tree: New Roots
Merantau Arts Collective
Sept 26 - Oct 30, 2026
Opening Sept 26, 2-5pm

Featuring new work by the Merantau Arts Collective, Mother Tree: New Roots converges five emerging Nusantara artists’ practices around batik as a method of contemporary sense-making, communication, and spiritual technology. Through the process of batik-making, a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique whose present form was developed primarily in West Java, the collective explores the tension of practicing and reinterpreting deeply-held cultural and philosophical traditions, without elders or direct lineages to guide them.

Foregrounded by the complexities of the diasporic experience on Turtle Island, the collective considers their own relationship to colonialism, imperialism, and the legacy of late-capitalist extractionism while on stolen, unceded, and unsurrendered land.

During the exhibition, the collective will be hosting a series of batik-making workshops on October 3 & October 17 with materials provided by The Batik Library. Attendance will be sliding scale $25-45 (PWYC), and participants are welcome to take home their project at the end of the session.

To learn more about the exhibition, the artists, or to sign up for the workshops, please visit our website unitpitt.ca or find the link in bio.

Mother Tree: New Roots is generously supported by Sierra Club BC, the Hua Foundation, and the City of Vancouver.

As we settle into fall, we’re taking a moment to reminisce on the summer by looking back on the “Solar Bee Garden Tea Zen REMIX” exhibition by Peter Courtemanche and Lam Wong that took place earlier this summer.

This exhibition included a series of special events beginning with an opening reception on May 30, 2026, which included a warm welcome from Audrey Siegl (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm). Beautifully captured by Sophia Santos-English @sophiasantosenglish

In the close of summer, we invite you to join us in the UNIT/PITT garden to reminisce and recenter in time together 🌀🐛

Reminisce via sun printing: We’ll harness the power of the sun to make anthotype prints using a turmeric-based solution and sunlight 🌼 Gather flowers, leaves, and herbs from the garden or bring your own items that are emblematic of this summer—or nostalgic of summers past—to create prints with :- ) We encourage you to experiment and we recommend bringing items with interesting shapes or varying degrees of translucency for best results. ✨

Recenter via writing: Thinking toward the seasons ahead, Chantal (@flowingfawn) and the team will guide an optional writing exercise on what we’d like to bring forward from this summer; letters to self, notes of gratitude and memories. There will be a few typewriters at the event, generously provided by Chantal, so you can type your piece and take it home with you 💟

Light snacks and tea will be provided 🍵🌱
We welcome you to bring snacks to share if you can!

date: sunday, aug 23
time: 2-5pm ➡️ please come on time so we can start all together :- )
place: UNIT/PITT 2954 West 4th Ave
price: freee! with an option to donate to future events!

Please RSVP through the link in the bio so we know how many people are coming and so you can understand our community guidelines! <3

If you can’t make it this time, not to worry! hotmothertruckers hangouts is a monthly series with an event taking place every 4th weekend of the month 🌱
