Meet Jenae Calderon!

Majors: Psychology, Communication Studies
Hometown: Fairfield, Nebraska

Jenae will be a senior this fall, double-majoring in psychology and communication studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.

“I’m from Fairfield, Nebraska, and I’ve loved being able to study topics I’m interested in and participate in research at UNL,” Jenae said.

She has always been interested in psychology and felt it was the right field of study for her.

“I’m especially drawn to behavioral psychology and getting into the more philosophical side of it,” Jenae said. “I decided to add communications to the mix to give me a leg up in the business world.”

This summer, Jenae received an Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience (UCARE) grant and is taking COMM 398: Research Assistantship in Communication Studies.

“I’m a research assistant in Dr. Kathryn Holland’s Sexual Assault and Sexual Health (SASH) Lab, working on Title IX policy research,” Jenae said. “Rebecca Howard Valdivia reached out to me directly, which led to us collaborating on the proposal and submitting the UCARE application.”

“I wanted to get some hands-on, real-world experience over the summer instead of just traditional classwork,” Jenae said. “Immersing myself in actual research felt like the best way to grow my skills.”

“A really cool moment was during one of my weekly meetings with Rebecca. We were going over an interview she gave me to code, and I realized I had coded it pretty fast and it just flowed straight through,” Jenae said. “It was awesome to see how much easier it’s gotten for me.”

“Learning more about qualitative coding has interested me a lot, and it has definitely improved my research and analytical skills,” Jenae said.

this sure is the place! 💌

Four years of parking tickets, nights on O or the 502 balcony, spending hours in the Manter basement with rats, and soooo many laughs and cries. I would do it all over again. @unlincoln, thank you for giving me this experience with these people who gave me my reason to stay. GBR forever and ever ❤️

Meet Sydney Greenspan!
Major: Journalism (CoJMC)
Minor: Communication Studies and Psychology

The junior from Vernon Hills, Illinois is grateful for the internship she completed at the Center for Communication Excellence. This experience helped her discover the best direction for her future.

Sydney’s tasks included training and coaching students in communication skills and working with the department’s social media committee. “The main focus of my internship was helping students in COMM 101, 209, and 286 prepare for their in-class speeches,” Sydney said. In fall 2025, she became the center’s creative director.

“I learned how to help reduce students’ speech anxiety, which was impactful,” she said. “I also learned how to use Canva and create content for specific audiences.”

The experience taught her the importance of a strong support system. “Everyone encouraged me and helped guide me toward the career I’m interested in,” Sydney recalls. That support allowed her to refine which field would work best for her future, leading her to switch her major to journalism.

“It helped me realize that I want to be a writer and that journalism would be the best fit for my career goals,” Sydney said.

Sydney is now an opinion writer for the Daily Nebraskan. “At first, I wanted to work in political communications, but now I want to be a reporter,” Sydney said. I believe news is important as it helps people make sense of the world, and I would love to be a part of that.”
