POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It's Dance Marathon takeover week! University of Nebraska-Lincoln Dance Marathon (UNDM) is a student-led organization that works to raise money and awareness for Children’s Nebraska, a full-service pediatric hospital located in Omaha, Nebraska.

This year, proceeds will contribute to connecting patients in rural Nebraska to behavioral health providers (Project Glow Booths), a pediatric CAT/MRI simulation tool designed to reduce fear and anxiety for kids during scans (Siemens MINITOM Kids), and to updating technology for fast nighttime helicopter transports (Night Vision Goggles).

These events wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of the UNDM Director of Recruitment and Psychology major, Emma Dierks. In her role as Director of Recruitment, Dierks shared that she gets to “help new members find their place in the organization and show them how they can make a difference” in the lives of children and families who receive care at Children’s Nebraska.

Dierks first became involved in UNDM through a friend, and was inspired by the energy and impact of the program after attending her first HuskerThon – an 8-hour event full of dancing, connecting with the community, and more.

"The atmosphere, the kids, and the passion everyone had for supporting Children's Nebraska made the experience so special," Dierks said. "I knew I wanted to be more involved and help make that same impact."

For Dierks, Dance Marathon has become “one of the most meaningful parts of (her) undergraduate experience” at UNL, while also making a lasting impact on our community. Join UNDM in their events this week, and learn more about the UNDM mission and how you can get involved here: https://dm.unl.edu/.

Our next Alumni Feature: Dr. Josh Haby!

Dr. Haby graduated from UNL’s Law-Psychology program with his PhD and Master of Legal Studies (MLS). During his time here at UNL, Dr. Haby reinvigorated the Scientific Resources for the Law (SRL) alongside Dr. Brank. His research focused on many aspects of jury decision making in both criminal and civil settings.

Dr. Haby is now working as an Associate Consultant at Trial Behavior Consulting in Los Angeles, California, but he is based in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Haby describes his role as a consultant as a translator: helping attorneys communicate their case to lay people, making complex concepts digestible, and encouraging engagement from an audience. He also “translates” the responses of jurors back to the attorneys, helping them understand the strengths and potential issues in their case.

As Dr. Haby looks forward in his career, he says “As cliché as it may be, I want to continue to grow and take on new opportunities. I look forward to leading and helping foster growth in others – mentoring and training others was one of the most rewarding aspects of my graduate career.”

At home, Dr. Haby’s family has “an awesome dog, kinda loud chickens, and a baby on the way.” Wear your Husker gear to the Denver airport to get a #GoBigRed from Dr. Haby! Text reads: Alumni Feature! Dr. Josh Haby

Food, fun, and company! We had such a wonderful time at our annual Psychology Welcome Back Picnic last month. It was especially nice to see faculty, staff, students, and furry members of the department all together.

Thanks to everyone who came out to gather, reconnect, and help us start the year on such a positive note. And a special thank you to Pam Waldvogel and the Graduate Student Association for organizing such a lovely event!

First alumni feature of the year: Shaundra Wiederholt!

Shaundra graduated in 2026 with a major in Psychology and minors in CYAF and Positive Psychology and Wellbeing. During her undergrad she received the highest distinction through the College of Arts and Sciences for her thesis focusing on first-generation student success and was involved in the University Honors Program.

She is currently working in the UNL Office of Admissions as the High Achieving and Honors Recruitment Specialist. This has allowed her to work closely with Honors Partners to bring help academically driven students to UNL. Shaundra said, "I was a student in the University Honors Program, and I loved the connections I was able to make! I hope to bring prospective students here to have the same experience I did."

Shaundra is also pursuing a master's in higher education administration here at UNL. Her involvement with New Student Enrollment, as well as the Honors Program, fostered her passion for connecting with students in higher education and developing programs to be successful for all students. Shaundra said, "My end career goal with my master's program is to have a career in higher education where I can mentor students. I love making lasting and impactful connections with others. I know the college transition can feel difficult coming to UNL from a small town and as a first-generation student, if I can help in any way, I would love to do that." by @unlpsych

On Thursday, August 27th, UNL Honors hosted Healing Nebraska: Talent Meets Need with the Foundry, a nonprofit organization here in Lincoln. Psychology senior Lauren Vogel was given the opportunity to speak at the event about her internship experience, which was provided to her through the Intern Foundry, a joint program between UNL Honors and Foundry.

Vogel said this about the event, "I'm excited to speak to behavioral health professionals in Nebraska as well as fellow students. And also people who may have no experience with mental health to hopefully share my experiences from the internship to help everyone feel comfortable advocating for mental health in the future."

Vogel worked with Mid-Plains Center this summer to contribute to their mental health work in Grand Island, and acted as a research and advocacy intern within their organization. Throughout her internship, she did an evaluation of the organization and researched the needs of the region. Her work will leave a lasting impact on the area. by @unlpsych

Starting Fall 2026 strong! The Foundry and UNL Honors hosted a conference, Healing Nebraska, in the first week of classes highlighting behavioral health in Nebraska, as well as the work UNL students are doing in the field. The event connected 200 plus Huskers with different facilitators in behavioral health, as well as other fields, from across the state to talk about the work they do. Students heard from four student presenters, along with two professionals including Dr. Alison Delizza from UNMC's Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN).

In 2024, UNL won Abbott Laboratories' We Give Blood challenge in collaboration with the Big Ten. The school received $1 million from Abbott, and those funds helped foster the Healing Nebraska behavioral health cohort. For the 2026 challenge, Nebraska is currently in second place. If you want to help push UNL back to the top, you can donate and see the live stats by visiting https://bigten.org/abbott/battle/.
