CRITICAL MYSTERY STUDIES
An Interdisciplinary Symposium

In-Person + Online
The University of New Mexico
November 16-17, 2026

Call for Papers

Co-Organizers: Matthew David Goodwin, Sarah Hernandez, Nahir Otaño-Gracia

We are seeking proposals for our 2nd Critical Mystery Studies Symposium that will be held in-person and online on November 16-17, 2026. This symposium aims to foster new interdisciplinary dialogues that critically and creatively illuminate the mysteries that surround us. To this end we invite proposals for papers, panels, roundtables, workshops, artist talks, or creative projects, which engage the cultural depth of the mysteries. Proposals can explore specific mysteries (La Llorona, Roswell, there are so many!) or investigate the artistic genres that depict or reappropriate the mysteries such as science fiction, fantasy, surrealism, gothic, horror, etc. In particular, we are interested in submissions that highlight critical theories being used in the field as well as inter-ethnic collaborations.

Critical Mystery Studies (CMS) is the critical and interdisciplinary study of mysteries such as monster sightings, ghost hauntings, and alien encounters, among many more. We examine the role of mystery in the long traditions, histories of resistance, and cultural expressions of BIPOC communities, and at the same time, we explore how mysteries are entangled with racism, sexism, coloniality, and other systems of oppression. Studies within CMS explore the nature and meaning of mysteries, the discourses surrounding them in their specific geographical and cultural contexts, their representation in fiction and film, and how mysteries have been reclaimed, reinterpreted, and reappropriated by cultural creators.

Sometimes, the smallest moments can shape your future.
Esther never imagined that finding a book in a little free library would inspire her path toward graduate school and community-engaged work.
Watch this glimpse of her journey. Watch full spotlight on our you tube, link in bio.
What unexpected experience has changed your path?

On Monday, I had the privilege of being a guest speaker at this year’s Summer Institute, Reimagining Borders Through Sounds, Sights, and Sensations, hosted by UNM’s Latin American & Iberian Institute. More than a presentation, it was a moment of community—educators and storytellers coming together to rethink how borders are felt, lived, and taught.

Thank you, Eva Rodriguez-Gonzalez, for the invitation! Likewise, a huge thanks to the supporting departments and programs—the UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute, UNM Art Department, the Alfonso Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies, the Guadalupe Institute, the College of Arts and Sciences, and The University of New Mexico Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

“You don’t know what you don’t see until you step outside of a familiar space…”
For Esther, that shift came from moving beyond the classroom and into real community work - listening, collaborating, and learning from perspectives she hadn’t experienced before.
As a master’s student in Latin American Studies at UNM, her work spans participatory budgeting and food systems initiatives in Albuquerque’s International District, where community voices shape real solutions.
This clip is just one moment from her story.
Watch the full interview on YouTube, link in bio to hear how these experiences transformed her understanding of community engagement and personal growth.

What happens when elementary students step into a college classroom?
Students from the UNM Department of Spanish and Portuguese partnered with Coronado Dual Language K–8 to bring bilingual learning to life-through storytelling, performance, and real interaction.
It’s more than a class. It’s a pathway forward for bilingual students.
