🌽 New research sheds light on 6,000 years of maize farming in the Maya region!

A new study co-led by Dr. Keith Prufer, UNM Professor of Anthropology (@unm_anthro) and LAII Affiliated Faculty, and Megan Walsh of Central Washington University (@central_washington_university) provides evidence that people in the Maya-speaking region were farming maize as early as 6,000 years ago. The findings offer new insights into ancient food production and changing agricultural practices in what is now Belize.

🎧 Want to learn more about this research? Dr. Prufer and UNM Anthropology PhD student Nadia Neff, a current LAII PhD Fellowship recipient, and co-author of the recent research article, discuss their work in an episode of UNM’s It’s (Probably) Not Rocket Science podcast (@ipnrs_unm).

Dr. Emily Jones, LAII Affiliated Faculty and director of UNM’s Zooarchaeology Lab, alongside 12 other researchers, conducted a multidisciplinary literature review about historical moose sightings in Colorado and the Southern Rockies.
The study provides a framework for scientists and land managers to make more informed decisions about developing and updating management plans for public and private lands. It also offers a model for researching the historical presence of other species in the area, such as elk, which were reintroduced in the early twentieth century and remain the subject of ongoing debate over how populous they were prior to European colonization.
