A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of watching As Ek Kon Kies premiere at the kykNET Silwerskerm Festival. It’s a rare and special experience to see something you’ve worked on projected onto a big screen, surrounded by the people who brought it to life. OFFICIALLY LIVE. LEWENDIG! (link in bio) At its heart, the 7-minute cinematic music short, “voel jy jonger”, began with a simple desire: to preserve a feeling. The film grew from two artists wanting to explore what it means to create from a place of love, where the work itself becomes both a gift and an act of complete vulnerability. “It felt like Magé was revealing her heart, and I could receive it. I was fascinated by what happens in the quiet moments surrounding that offering, when words fall away, when the work no longer only belongs to you, and silence becomes the holder for presence, breath and the possibility of being fully seen. That’s the film I wanted to make.” — Emilie While deeply personal, the film also quietly broadens the stories we see on screen. It presents queer love without explanation or spectacle, allowing it to exist with the same tenderness, awkwardness and universality as any other love story. “Hierdie projek het moeiteloos vorm gevat. Alles het vreeslik natuurlik gevoel. Die spasie en die span. Dit was my eerste proper acting gig en ek was lekker geïntimideer, blaffing with the big dogs. ‼️ SOLD OUT ‼️ FROM HER BONES is a new South African event brought to you by Unusual Bones & Pascale Schoeman. A place where different creative disciplines meet, where conversations begin and where the women shaping South Africa’s creative future can be celebrated. Please join us for our first edition of the event which will take place on August 10th, 2026 at Gorgeous George’s; The Pink Room, where we will explore the collaboration between musicians and filmmakers. Pairing live performances with music film screenings before opening up a conversation about the stories, relationships and creative process behind the work. Doors open at 17:30 and event starts sharply at 18:00. I’m incredibly honoured to have worked on four films screening at Silwerskermfees 2026, taking place from 19–22 August. @silwerskermfees Last year, I attended my first Silwerskermfees with CARISSA @carissa_film , where I received nominations for Best Costume Design & Best Production Design. I never imagined that one year later I would be returning to the festival with four films. CARISSA introduced me to people who trusted me with their stories. I don’t take that for granted, and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to make work that aligns with my purpose and my passion. Day 1 of Basha Uhuru Creative Week invites audiences into an exploration of the stories, memories, and struggles that have shaped South Africa’s ongoing journey toward freedom. Through a compelling programme of film screenings, archival storytelling, and artistic expression, the day interrogates themes of identity, resistance, womanhood, memory, land, and queer liberation. Bringing together filmmakers, artists, cultural practitioners, and audiences, the programme asks an urgent question: How is freedom remembered, documented, embodied, and passed on across generations? Through intimate personal narratives and collective histories, these works explore the ways in which memory itself becomes a site of liberation, challenging erasure, reclaiming narratives, and imagining new futures. This curation creates a  space for reflection, remembrance, dialogue, and a deeper engagement with the cultural archives that continue to inform our present and shape our future. Long story short: don’t wait for work. Create it. On 23 April 2025 at 23:45, I submitted three short film proposals for Silwerskermfees ’26. I was in a quiet season. No acting work. A lot of prayer. A lot of wondering. And one reminder I kept coming back to: waiting to be chosen is not the only way. One of those proposals was originally titled “I Give Up”. Ironically, it was the one that got chosen. A year later, after countless hours of reworking, renaming, rewriting, and sleepless nights reimagining the story, we’re finally on the other side. “As Ek Kon Kies” is alive. No longer a file on my laptop or an idea I hoped would happen someday, it’s a film. We made it. To @emiliebadenhorst and @kanya.viljoen, and the entire team from @unusual_bones, thank you for joining me on this journey, and for steering this story with such care, instinct, heart, and vision. I cannot wait for the rest of the world to see it. To @zandrecoetzer and @chanel.muller, your guidance and mentorship have been invaluable. Learning from two of the greats was once only a dream. Let this film be a reminder: if the work is quiet, make something. Send the thing. Ask the friend. Trust the nudge.
