In an effort to get people to look into each other’s eyes more, and also to appease the mutes, the government has decided to allot each person exactly one hundred and sixty-seven words, per day.

When the phone rings, I put it to my ear without saying hello. In the restaurant I point at chicken noodle soup. I am adjusting well to the new way.

Late at night, I call my long distance lover, proudly say I only used fifty-nine today. I saved the rest for you.

When she doesn’t respond, I know she’s used up all her words, so I slowly whisper I love you thirty-two and a third times. After that, we just sit on the line and listen to each other breathe.

There’s something quite special about watching Magé Troskie create music. She listens somewhere deeper than the obvious.

For As Ek Kon Kies, @magetroskie wrote an original worship song which she performed live while we filmed. Suddenly it wasn’t a set pretending to be a church anymore. The music gave everyone in that room something real to respond to, and somehow carried the heart and spiritual weight of the story before we’d even finished making it.

Then came the score, and the same intuition followed. Magé has this incredible ability to feel alongside a character and create from inside that emotion. She never settles. Every conversation, every piece of feedback, every new thought became an opportunity to go away and come back with something completely fresh.

So today we honour for her originality, her intuition, her generosity, and for trusting that quiet (or sometimes extremely loud) voice inside herself over and over again. Thank you for giving this little film its sound and so much of its spirit. by @unusual_bones

As Ek Kon Kies OFFICIAL PREMIERE DAY!

One of the things we admire most about @beata_bena_ is that she doesn’t wait for things to happen to her. She knows what she wants, and when the opportunity isn’t there, she creates it. That courage runs through everything she brought to As Ek Kon Kies, as Kyleigh, co-writer and executive producer.

Three people (@emiliebadenhorst & @kanya.viljoen & @beata_bena_ ) writing one little short film together sounds like it could be chaos but somehow it became one of the most intimate parts of the process. The story ebbed and flowed between us until it became difficult to tell whose life belonged where. We consciously decided to put our hearts on paper, and Beata was incredibly brave in doing that with us.

As an actress, she approaches character with an insane amount of sensitivity and detail, digging into the psychology, spirituality and why behind every little choice until it feels true.

So this one is for Beata, for her courage, determination and ridiculous attention to detail, and for not only portraying beautiful characters, but creating the work she wants to exist.

Please meet the captivating Anoecha Kruger who plays Lara in As Ek Kon Kies @silwerskermfees this year.

@kushie_noechie is quite literally one of the rawest performers we’ve ever had the privilege of working with. She carries this fierce honesty that makes it almost impossible to experience what she does as “performance”. Her characters feel like people you know, people whose mess and desire and contradictions you recognise. Watching her embody emotion is a visceral experience.

For As Ek Kon Kies, we needed someone who could hold that very complicated space between what you deeply desire and what you believe you need to let go of, without ever reducing queerness to a stereotype. Anoescha understood that so instinctively. She arrives eager, curious and completely available, leaves her ego at the door and gives herself over to finding whatever is most truthful in the moment.

What an honest gift for a director.

At its heart, the 7-minute cinematic music short, “voel jy jonger”, began with a simple desire: to preserve a feeling.

The film grew from two artists wanting to explore what it means to create from a place of love, where the work itself becomes both a gift and an act of complete vulnerability.

“It felt like Magé was revealing her heart, and I could receive it. I was fascinated by what happens in the quiet moments surrounding that offering, when words fall away, when the work no longer only belongs to you, and silence becomes the holder for presence, breath and the possibility of being fully seen. That’s the film I wanted to make.” — Emilie

While deeply personal, the film also quietly broadens the stories we see on screen. It presents queer love without explanation or spectacle, allowing it to exist with the same tenderness, awkwardness and universality as any other love story.

Let’s take a peak at the intuitive directing duo behind As Ek Kon Kies, Kanya Viljoen & Emilie Badenhorst.

“One of the things we love most about directing together is that neither of us feels precious about being right. The script is never the thing we’re trying to protect. The story is.

We spend a lot of time asking, “What does this moment actually need?” Sometimes we finish each other’s sentences. Other times we disagree completely. We play, we argue a little, we follow the actors, we rewrite things on the day, we trust our gut, and eventually we find the version that feels the most honest.

We’re drawn to stories that ask us to look a little closer. Stories about people living under judgement, shame or expectation. Stories that remind us that love, faith and belonging are rarely as simple as we want them to be.”

A huge thank you to the @silwerskermfees for believing in As Ek Kon Kies and giving this story its first home. We can’t wait to share it with you.

Pascale: “Hay Em, so what are you doing in the next 24hrs, I have gear, wanna shoot?”

How could we not?

Under less than 24hrs we created the intimate 7-minute cinematic short, that we will be releasing tomorrow called: “voel jy jonger”, with original music by @magetroskie

This isn’t a traditional music video, nor is it a conventional short film. Instead, it uses live performance as the emotional centre of a narrative, allowing music and cinema to exist as equal partners in telling the story.

It was the most rewarding and honest collaboration between independent musician @magetroskie , independent filmmaker @emiliebadenhorst , the gentle hand that is @pascaleschoeman and incredible actor @kristenraath

The film was built on trust and instinct. There wasn’t a finished script waiting for anyone. There was an emotional intention, a handful of story beats, and a group of people who trusted one another enough to discover the film together. Everything you see is improvised with clear intention and direction. We weren’t trying to perform emotion, we were trying to create the conditions where it could happen naturally.

That’s what makes the film feel alive!

FROM HER BONES is a new South African event brought to you by Unusual Bones & Pascale Schoeman. A place where different creative disciplines meet, where conversations begin and where the women shaping South Africa’s creative future can be celebrated.

Please join us for our first edition of the event which will take place on August 10th, 2026 at Gorgeous George’s; The Pink Room, where we will explore the collaboration between musicians and filmmakers. Pairing live performances with music film screenings before opening up a conversation about the stories, relationships and creative process behind the work. Doors open at 17:30 and event starts sharply at 18:00.

In this edition we welcome your host for the evening @loren_loubser, film screenings by directors @emiliebadenhorst and @hanajaynesho and DOPs @skylahaley_ and @___p.s_______ as well as live performances by artist @mishykope @akeeda.music and @magetroskie.
