Young adults furthering our education, all thanks to Chick Evans.

St. Catherine-St. Lucy School was honored to host guest speaker Elijah Williams in our 8th-grade classroom this past Friday! Elijah shared powerful insights with our students about getting comfortable being uncomfortable, learning from failure, and always betting on yourself with confidence. Elijah’s willingness to step outside his comfort zone has opened incredible doors.

A Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund awardee and graduate of Saint Ignatius College Prep, he earned the prestigious Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation scholarship after caddying at Sankaty Head Golf Club in Nantucket, Massachusetts, where he caddied for CEOs, Bill Belichick, and Morgan Freeman.

The Evans Scholarship took Elijah to the University of Oregon, where he played four years of college football against top national talent while earning his MBA. After graduation, he played football in Europe for a year, immersing himself in new cultures across the Atlantic. Elijah now works as a construction consultant in Chicago, serving clients based in Southern California.

Thank you, Elijah, for being such an inspiration to our students! A big thank you as well to Nick Cross at Daniel Murphy for connecting us. 🎓🏈✨

Come play a par 5 with me! First time out there and this course is pretty amazing! Also had the pleasure of having the @uoevans_scholars kids carry my bag for the day! It was an awesome experience. Those kids are going to be great caddies. #uoevansscholars #pacificdunes #fyp #vibes #oregon

Walking up to the first tee this morning I saw a group of young people hanging out, waiting for a loop. Seeing them all there at 7:30a ready for a walk made me smile and hopeful for all of their futures. If you get an opportunity to play at a club that has caddies, consider taking one. They may not know it but the time spent learning how to read people and feeling their way through 4 hours with a stranger will shape their lives in ways I could have only wished for myself.

The Evans Scholarship provides opportunities for Oregon youth to receive a full-ride scholarship. The University of Oregon opened its scholarship house in 2016. More in the story about the impact this scholarship program is making in Oregon.
