Terence R. Flotte, MD, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School, was elected today as a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Dean Flotte led the first-in-human trials of adeno-associated virus vectors for cystic fibrosis, alpha-1 antitrypsin and Tay-Sachs disease.

“The struggles that children and families with rare genetic diseases endure, the bravery and grit that they show, has been an inspiration to me,” Flotte said. “I hope that over time my work will have more impact in helping them directly.”

PhD candidates Laurel Stine and Sara Cahill met as kids at a gymnastics camp in Westborough and reunited at Accepted Students Day for the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School. Stine and Cahill, who work in the lab of Fiachra Humphries, PhD, have received Ruth L. Kirschstein grants to support their immunology research.

“Working with Laurel has been a wonderful experience,” said Cahill. “She’s really helped me to grow as a scientist and as a person, and to develop my confidence as well as my skillset.”

“Sara is a wonderful friend. We’ve been in this together since we both joined the cohort,” Stine said.

Stine, a proud Colgate University alumna, investigates cell death in autoimmune diseases; Cahill, a College of the Holy Cross graduate, seeks to understand how immune cells recognize and respond to patterns from pathogens and how changes to the cells could be connected to inflammation and infection progression. The story of @UMassBoston has always been one of possibility and opportunity. Now, with the launch of its $250 million Rooted & Rising fundraising campaign, the campus is building on that legacy to create even greater opportunities for future generations.

With more than $182 million already raised, this ambitious campaign will expand scholarships and student support, advance groundbreaking research and innovation, and help prepare students for successful careers.

This effort is about more than investing in a campus; it's about investing in the talent, ideas, and aspirations of people across Boston and beyond. Congratulations to Chancellor Marcelo M Suarez-Orozco and the entire UMass Boston community on this exciting milestone.

Noah Sciambra, MS, an MD/PhD student in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), has received a grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to investigate how natural genetic differences influence a host’s ability to resist toxins produced by the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Working in the lab of Read Pukkila-Worley, MD, professor of medicine and director of the MSTP, Sciambra has identified a small region of the C. elegans genome that plays an important role in determining resistance to bacterial pathogens. He's now working to pinpoint the genetic differences within this region that are responsible for resistance.

Click the article in our bio to read about his hopes to pursue a career as a physician-scientist, caring for patients while conducting research that informs the understanding and treatment of their diseases. Sciambra, a proud graduate from the University of Alabama, is considering specializing in allergy and immunology or infectious diseases. ⬆️

Yesterday was a special moment for @UMassLowell and the City of Lowell, and, for me, a chance to reflect on just how far we've come.

Back when I was still chancellor of UMass Lowell, the Lowell Innovation Network Corridor (LINC) was still an idea. We began acquiring properties around campus with an eye toward UMass Lowell's long-term future and the role the university could play in driving economic growth and opportunity throughout the city.

Yesterday, we celebrated another example of how that vision is quickly becoming a reality.

Under Chancellor Julie Chen's leadership, and with support from Governor Maura Healey, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, Congresswoman Lori Trahan, Mayor Dan Rourke, and incredible partners like Draper, LINC is bringing together higher education, industry, and government to create new opportunities for research, innovation, workforce development, and economic growth.

This is what public higher education can do at its best: bring people and ideas together to strengthen our communities and build what comes next. I'm incredibly proud of what UMass Lowell and its partners are building, and excited for what lies ahead.
