We are thrilled to share that this July, Professor Suzi Oliveira de Lima was appointed to the inaugural role of associate director of mentorship at the University of Toronto's Black Research Network (BRN). Over the course of two years, Dr. Lima will help develop and implement mentorship opportunities through the BRN. Dr. Lima's position is integral to the BRN's larger goal of "expanding mentorship pathways that contribute to research success for its members, which includes undergraduate students to faculty across the University of Toronto.” (BRN News, 2026). Launched in October 2021, the BRN promotes Black-led, interdisciplinary research across the tri-campus. It enhances the visibility and impact of Black-led research by sustaining a cross-divisional network of Black scholars and facilitating collaboration and research engagement opportunities for its members. Check out the full article on the BRN's website and keep an eye out to see Dr. Lima's unique contributions to BRN initiatives. Congratulations, Dr. Lima, on the exciting new appointment! 📸 Andy Jibb, Black Research Network

🩺 AI scribes can reduce the time physicians spend documenting patient visits by 69.1% during simulated primary care appointments, according to new research out of U of T Engineering. The study, led by LaShawn Murray (MIE PhD Candidate), involved nine physicians completing simulated patient encounters both with and without the use of the AI scribes, which recorded audio and used it to generate structured, regulatory-compliant clinical notes for a patient’s medical chart. They found that when the scribes were in use, the doctors spent significantly less time documenting — and researchers noted an unexpected change in how some physicians kept track of their thoughts during appointments. 💬 “I hope with this technology we see a reduction in things like charting being done after hours or days later,” says Murray. 🔗 Read more at our link in bio or at uofteng.ca/q9uljq #UofTEngineering #AI #airesearch LaShawn Murray stands on a bridge over a river with trees in the background. As a 10-year-old, Jordan Young, enthusiastic about dinosaurs, visited a biology lab at UTM--and for the first time heard the word "paleontologist." "Yes, this will be my career,” Young recalls thinking at the time. And years later, he is indeed pursuing his dream: Young returned to UTM to pursue a double major in Paleontology and Earth Sciences, with a minor in Biomedical Communications. Last year, he began work on a master’s degree at UTM after earning a scholarship from the School of Graduate Studies that recognizes outstanding academic achievement among Black and Indigenous graduate students. He just published his initial first-author paper in the journal Scientific Reports, with findings that provide some of the earliest direct evidence of large land predators actively hunting sizable plant-eating animals. But he is not only pursuing excellence in his chosen field. He also sees himself as a trailblazer: “Being among the first recognized Black Canadian paleontologists is quite a milestone in modern Canadian history,” he says, noting that he’s proud to pave a path for other Black Canadians.
