"We want aging to be viewed as a site of creativity, connection and becoming."

Shanice Chin is part of a University of Toronto Scarborough research project exploring how digital storytelling can support the well-being of Black and racialized older adults. 

Preliminary findings from the Digital Kuumba project, which draws on Africentric principles of community connection and collective knowledge sharing, suggest the approach can foster belonging and well-being.

The Black Research Network began with the vision of four renowned researchers and academic leaders: Lisa Robinson, Alissa Trotz, Maydianne Andrade and Rhonda McEwen.

Together with Beth Coleman, the BRN’s inaugural director, they established the first research initiative of its kind in Canada — creating a space to foster academic development and build community beyond academic silos.

Suzi Oliveira de Lima has been named the Black Research Network’s inaugural associate director of mentorship. 

Lima, an associate professor in the University of Toronto Faculty of Arts & Science, began a two-year term in July.

In the year ahead, Lima will help develop a structured framework for co-ordinated mentorship opportunities across the network. Her approach to mentorship is grounded in supporting the well-being of students and researchers.
