Thanks to all who participated in the health fair at @isgsl_official The event was great. Over 300 winter coats were passed, 61 vaccines given, 100 dental exams/screenings done, and almost 50 diabetes screenings with education for adults. Eyewear, footwear, backpacks, resources, toothbrushes and so much more were given away. We had a class on diabetes and high blood pressure along with providers counseling patients individually. Vision exams were also conducted. The hands on CPR station was a huge success! Thank you so much to all the participants and all the wonderful volunteers with @isgsl_official. @wagma786 @mevabee @tuleklr

I spent my morning at Heber Valley Elementary providing fluoride varnish to 135 students from kindergarteners to fifth graders! 🦷

Having the opportunity to bring something I am so passionate about into my own community and help kids take care of their smiles means so much to me.

I am SO grateful to all the incredible people who helped make today possible.

It was spectacular to have assistants from practices all over Wasatch County, a pre-dental student applying to dental schools, two amazing MTech dental assisting students, as well as the lovely staff from @alpine_valley_dentistry95 and Dr. Ogilvie there to help educate the students on their oral health as well as applying the fluoride!

I will always be so thankful for the principal, Mrs. Cummings, and the wonderful staff of @hebervalleyelementary for working with me to bring this program back to our school district. I will also be eternally grateful for the grant I received from @uofudentistry for the fluoride from @ultradentproducts. And all of the students who allowed us to perform this service. I could not have done this without all of your help! 🤍

Working and immersing myself in dentistry, I see everyday how important prevention and access to care really are; which is why the opportunity to step outside of the dental office and bring preventative care directly to kids makes this even more special.

135 little smiles, one big reminder of why oral health is so much more than a smile! This is just the beginning! 😉💗

IT’S ALMOST HERE!!

Next week on September 25th, we’ll be back at Heber Valley Elementary providing FREE fluoride varnish treatments to students! 🩷

PARENTS❗️Keep and eye out for permission slips being sent home with the weekly newsletter to sign your kids up if you missed us at Back to School Night!

Last time we were at Heber Valley, 100 students received fluoride varnish; and we’re so excited to continue making preventive oral health care more accessible to our community!

Fluoride varnish is a quick, simple way to help strengthen teeth and protect against cavities. Prevention is such an important part of oral health, especially for growing smiles! 🪥

This is exactly what my platform, More Than a Smile, is all about: making oral health care more accessible and showing how taking care of our smiles is an important part of taking care of our health. 🤍

Here’s to another day of protecting little smiles! 🦷💗

A healthy smile is as easy as ABC! 😁🪥

What an incredible opportunity it was yesterday evening to attend Heber Valley Elementary’s Back to School Night! I loved getting to connect with parents and students while promoting and educating our community about my FREE fluoride program, which we’ll be bringing back shortly after school starts! 🥳

I want to give another huge thank you to the University of Utah School of Dentistry for providing me with a grant for the fluoride varnish from Ultradent! And another big thank you to Principal Katie Cummings for working with me to bring this important service back to our school district. And of course, I have to give credit to the best dental hygienist (my mom) for sitting with, and helping me pass out the informative consent forms and educate parents! 🦷💗

Preventative dental care can make such a difference in a child’s oral health. I’m so excited to continue making oral health education and preventative care more accessible! 💙💫

The Oral Microbiome Doesn’t Stop at the Gumline

We’ve spent the last decade mapping periodontal pathogens as if the mouth were a closed system. It isn’t. Emerging evidence points to a bidirectional axis between the oral and gut microbiome — one that may directly influence periodontal inflammation, systemic immune tone, and even regenerative capacity after GBR or implant therapy.

Gaps I keep running into in the literature:

🔹 Oral-gut crosstalk is still poorly characterized: We know dysbiosis in one compartment correlates with inflammatory markers in the other, but the mechanistic pathways — bacterial translocation, metabolite signaling, immune cell trafficking — remain largely inferential.

🔹 Diet as a microbiome modulator is underused clinically: Nutritional interventions that shift gut microbial composition (fiber, polyphenols, fermented foods) show systemic anti-inflammatory effects, yet almost no periodontal protocols incorporate microbiome-directed nutrition as adjunctive therapy.

🔹 Individual variability is ignored: Two patients with identical clinical periodontal parameters can have radically different microbial ecosystems — and therefore different inflammatory trajectories. Standardized protocols don’t account for this.

🔹 Peri-implant disease and dysbiosis: The role of systemic microbiome shifts in peri-implantitis susceptibility is an almost entirely open question — one with real implications for long-term implant survival.

The question worth sitting with:
If the gut microbiome can shape systemic inflammation, why do we still treat periodontal disease as a purely local, site-specific condition?
