The Coastal Futures: Resilient Design & Adaptive Speculation is a joint @uscgradarchitecture @usclandarchurbanism design research studio that addresses climate change impacts—particularly sea level rise—on a Naval Base and its salt marsh estuary, one of California’s largest. Students develop adaptive strategies: Landscape Architecture focuses on near-term solutions, while Architecture uses AI for speculative approaches that look one hundred years in the future. The work aligns with U.S. Army Corps’ Engineering with Nature efforts. The studio is led by @urbanops & @aquercus

Dream City: Hijacking the Void by Alexandra Gauthier

“Dream City recognizes the potential of liminal and underutilised spaces within the contemporary metropolis.

“It re-imagines the void alley network of DTLA as a threshold to alternate urban possibilities.

“This thesis blurs reality and fantasy, presenting a liminal network shaped by dreams and desires – void spaces are hijacked by dreamscapes, fusing themselves into a heterotopic network adjacent to the built environment.

“Speculative narratives exploit the potential of navigating these environments, prompting reflection on spatial perception.

“It inspires new ways of thinking about the relationships between architecture, narrative and time.

“This thesis challenges designers to reconsider their role in shaping reality and imagine new transcendent experiences beyond spatial limits and disciplinary devotion to the ‘real’.”

As Peter Zumthor’s design for the new Geffen Galleries nears completion, architects, art lovers, and taxpayers alike are questioning whether the redesign will be a future masterpiece or an expensive misstep.

The ambitious undertaking that seeks not only to physically redefine a Los Angeles institution but also to re-envision how art is experienced has proven to be a gamble. Marked by multiple redesigns, delays, and escalating cost, the project has resulted in a structure stripped of some of Zumthor’s initial characteristic details. With polarizing reactions from Los Angeles residents, art critics, and the architectural community, the stakes extend beyond the museum’s reputation—it’s part of a broader conversation about art, architectural authorship, public accountability, and urban transformation.

Is an architectural thesis about buildings themselves...or about the questions we ask that inform the ideas that they embody?

In the “Tactical Techniques: Operative Methods for Speculative Architecture and Conceptual Pragmatism” @uscarchitecture @uscgradarchitecture graduate thesis studio led by @urbanops, students navigate the ‘future present’ with foresight and anticipation, shaping tomorrow’s built environments with insight and creativity, drawing inspiration from diverse disciplines, from social work to military strategy, these approaches transcend mere physicality to embrace socio-political and technological realms.

In contrast to the discursive conversations prevalent in 20th-century academia, which focused on artistic practices and the global exchanges of post-war modernism, the concept of the citizen architect rejects the traditional service-centric model of architectural practice. While many offices adopting this model may operate at various scales, they share similar operative methods rooted in Tactical Techniques. These approaches, drawing from the ‘boots on the ground’ ethos embraced by both social workers and the military, encompass field exploration, data gathering, exploitation of contextual systems, and engagement within specific temporal and sociological networks. They address not only physical aspects such as sites and structures but also socio-political, psychological, and technological dimensions. By embracing a blend of speculation and conceptual pragmatism, designers employing tactical techniques navigate what writer William H. Gibson terms the ‘future present’ – a reality infused with technological foresight.

THE LINE
Architecture Thesis
Instructor: John Southern

The proposed linear city along Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles seems to be a more feasible and context-sensitive approach to urban design. By integrating the existing street context, building typology, and surrounding city cultures, the project can create a vibrant and diverse urban environment that is both responsive to the local context and sustainable in the long run. Overall, the design of a contemporary city should consider the needs and aspirations of its inhabitants while being sensitive to the social and environmental challenges of our time.

Blame! is set in what is simply known as "The City", a gigantic megastructure now occupying much of what used to be the Solar System. Its exact size is unknown, but Tsutomu Nihei suggested its diameter to be at least that of Jupiter's orbit, or about 1.6 billion kilometers. In the manga, this is also suggested by Killy crossing an empty, spherical room roughly the size of Jupiter, suggesting that the planet had been there but was disassembled as the City grew.

By the time of the events of the manga, the City has basically become a series of layered, concentric Dyson spheres filled with haphazard architecture, largely devoid of life. These layers compose the supporting scaffold of the City, known as the Megastructure.

Traveling between layers is generally challenging due to the City's chaotic layout.

The return of housing happens cyclically over time and often coincides with massive cultural and societal transformation. Think modernity and the Vienna or Deutscher Werkbund, or post war suburbia and the Case Study House program, or the social movements of the 1960’s and projects like Habitat 67’. Or like.... Now: A global pandemic, out of control market forces, inflation, the lack of a social housing program, and extreme bifurcated politics.

This studio explores new forms of urban housing through a post-individual, speculative lense, taking advantage of this “moment in time” to explore and experiment with emerging ways in which we might orchestrate life/work; form new social pacts and networks; be transitory and permanent at the same time; exploit emerging material systems; anticipate new technologies and infrastructure; critique existing models of ownership; explore visions for a collective housing community; and ultimately form an exhibition of our work. With speculation and experimentation comes the understanding that not just the bounds of housing are being worked on but the system of regulations and ownership that condition how housing comes into being.
