Mt. Disappointment Trail Race: 15.6 miles and 3800 ft of gains. Goal was to finish and knock 10 min off the time from last year. Training was hard. 8 weeks of 7 day blocks and a lot of cross thrown into that schedule. Despite an injury on the way down to West Fork that made the uphill grind torture, it all worked out. Goals accomplished.

Final stats:

3hr12min (12 min faster than 2025). Top 10 in the field (literally 10th!) and first place in my age bracket (pays to be 51 lol!).

Practice makes perfect! Great day out! Thanks @lascalag for coming out and for the videos and finish photos. I owe you one! by @urbanops

Started last week at a memorial remembering my USC colleague and friend, Lorcan O'Herlihy, who passed last spring. He was a great architect, colleague, and mischievous soul, who produced a massive body of innovative housing projects across Los Angeles that will shape the way we understand the city for decades to come.

This evening I learned of another great urbanists passing. My fellow metropolitain expeditioner and passionate critic of all things good and bad in architecure, Orhan Ayyuce, left us late last week.

Orhan and I became close in 2010 when we met on a studio review at one institution or another and he said, "I read your most recent piece that you wrote and I totally agree. Let's meet up for lunch." I replied: "Well, I am currently documenting every skyscraper on Wilshire Boulevard for a zine I'm making. Do you want to come along? It will take days." He said "Sure. That sounds like something I would enjoy very much."

Years of animated intellectual conversations about architecture and the city followed. I would not be the architect and critic that I am today, had I not soaked in Orhan's atmosphere. I don't know what to do now that he is gone. But I am a writer at heart and words are already beginning to materialize on how to commemorate this great provacateur; this sly and loquacious human being who gave his life to his wife, to his students, and most of all to the adopted city he loved. Los Angeles already felt diminished after his move to New Mexico this summer. It feels even emptier now. by @urbanops
