This is the Paris they don’t want you to see.

You’ll hear plenty about violence, looting and arson in France. What you won’t hear enough about is police brutality, the violence of austerity, or why these young people are protesting.

Because this is NOT how it started.

Back in September, students and teachers at Lycée Saint-Exupéry in Créteil walked out after years of neglect left their school falling apart. Classrooms had no air conditioning during extreme heat. Teachers couldn’t teach. Students couldn’t learn.

Authorities eventually conceded, but protests had already spread across France. (Read Grace Blakeley’s piece – link in comments.)

France is home to some of Europe’s richest billionaires, yet children are protesting for something as basic as a functioning school.

THIS is CLASS STRUGGLE!

Political parties protect wealthy interests while ordinary people are told there’s no money for schools, hospitals or public services. When people resist, the police are deployed to maintain order.

The wealthy buy private education and healthcare. The rest of us accept whatever austerity leaves behind.

Question where your taxes go, demand better, organise a protest, and suddenly you’re labelled a troublemaker or an arsonist or an activist.

This isn’t just Paris. It’s London, New York, Rio, Berlin, Madrid, New Delhi and Nairobi.

These French students have the courage to demand what the rest of us have been conditioned to live without.

I was in Paris this weekend. I watched young people marching peacefully, demanding a future worth living in.

Yet the headlines focus on disorder, not the political decisions that brought them onto the streets.

Decent schools, hospitals and public services are your RIGHT, not a privilege. And demanding them is NOT a crime.

One of my bookish goals for 2026 was to read and share more indie books.

This month I've been binging indie authors on KU, branching out into new genres and discovering new authors.

Which of these grabs your interest?

“You can’t vet people for what they say in the future”… 🤔

True Nigel, but time and again you’ve been shown not to vet them at all… 😬
