Drift Collection Vessels like DVC Hayward pictured here have a very unique #USACE mission. Hayward's mission is to remove floating debris and obstructions from high use shipping channels and provide clear and safe navigation and ensure products arrive to the container terminals in the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Last week, Mississippi Valley Division (US Army Corps of Engineers) Commanding General Maj. Gen. Kimberly Peeples visited Brandon Road Lock and Dam in Joliet, Illinois, to learn more about the Brandon Road Interbasin Project (BRIP) and get an up close view of some of the site prep currently ongoing for the project.

The most significant piece of the site prep is excavation of bedrock within the lower channel. Using an underwater jackhammer called a “ripper” (the largest of its kind in the United States), the bedrock is being broken up and then removed to make way for the engineered channel as part of a complex ecosystem protection effort designed to prevent upstream movement of invasive carp and other aquatic nuisance species into the Great Lakes from the Illinois Waterway.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District Waterways Branch Chief Will Reilly and President of the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association (FSBPA), Pepper Uchino discuss the invaluable, shared, educational and networking space created at the 38th Annual FSBPA Annual Tech Conference, held in Panama City Beach.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, with 28 active beach nourishment projects, showed up and showed out in force, with about 35 attendees and 8 speakers to provide the Federal Government's perspective and expertise on everything from off-shore sand sourcing to maintenance dredging to NEPA to the economic value of Florida's beaches to the nation.

Jacksonville District staff was in good company with representation from State natural resource and environmental agencies, coastal engineers, biologists and geologists, tourist development councils, industry partners and city and county elected and administrative officials, proving once again, that protecting and preserving Florida's most fragile resource for the benefit of the State and Nation, never happens in a vacuum.

Since the start of recovery, USACE has continued to aggressively contribute to debris removal efforts within the impacted areas of Western North Carolina. With right of way and waterway debris alone, we have removed over 1.25 million cubic yards of debris. That is enough to fill 9.5 pro stadiums! That number will only rise as the mission continues. #usace #helene24 #hurricanehelene #northcarolina #recovery #emergencyresponse #missions #readiness

Due to Hurricane Helene, the J. Strom Thurmond Lake Project suffered severe damage to its forested areas. There is still a long road ahead for a full recovery, but 47,151 tons of timber have been recovered and sent to mills. For more information:

On a recent trip to New Orleans, Maj. Gen. Kelly @usacehq, Maj. Gen. Peeples @mississippivalleycommander, Col. Gipson @vicksburgusace, Col. Jones @usace_nola, staff, and experts from across USACE visited the construction of ARMOR ONE, soon-to-be USACE’s newest vessel. Termed “The World’s Largest Robot” this floating plant uses an automated process to “armor” the banks of the Mississippi River to prevent erosion and maintain the river’s current course.
