@Trauma_Rescue_Aid still needs $3,315 by October 1st to provide next month's cooking flour for 711 Sudanese refugee families, trying to fill a gap left by major refugee agencies who had funding cuts.

The Trump Administration did not seek to reform US foreign assistance but ended its role in building independent expertise, international engagement & values-based policy. Will future leaders act decisively to rebuild it? Suren Avanesyan writes for Compass: https://compass.icwa.org/p/the-gap-in-us-foreign-policy

Hello everyone! It’s me, RocketBear, and a bunch of friends.

One year ago today, the Secretary of State issued a memorandum for stop-work orders on existing aid; abruptly halting over 80% of US-funded development programs, and immediately cutting off life-saving medicines, medical care, food assistance, and humanitarian supplies for millions of people.

To learn more visit:

And check out
@usaidstopwork

This is a really sad anniversary for many of us, so to cheer you and me both up, I share with you this pile of puppies! I know it won’t make everything better but maybe it will help a little???

PS: If you are new to the RocketBear Project, my human draws portraits of pets whose people have lost their jobs due to the policies of this administration. In the captions, the pets tell you the story of their human’s important work.

If you or a pet you love would like to participate, please message me. My mom wants to draw all the dogs and cats and other pets to help tell your stories.

Today, I watched a 20-minute documentary from the @newyorkermag, documenting the choice that one mother had to make in the wake of Donald Trump's decision to end #USAID programming around the world.

"For more than two decades, international partnerships steadily improved survival rates for children suffering from acute malnutrition. In some regions, the rate of recovery had climbed above 90%. Those gains represented one of global health’s quiet success stories (UNICEF / WHO Global Nutrition Report, 2023)."

And yet, within hours of being sworn into his second term as US President, Donald Trump was banning foreign aid and halting decades of progress in eliminating preventable deaths from malnutrition.

Please spare 20 minutes to listen to one woman tell her story. Learn how US cuts to foreign aid programs shaped Rovina Naboi's world, forcing her into a choice no mother should have to make.

Earlier this year, I lost my job and turned to doodles, colorful pens, and markers as a form of art therapy. It began with these two simple buttons I created for AOTH (Aid on the Hill) — little pieces that somehow found their way into the hands of people across the country 🤯.

What started as a small act of healing grew into a passion project: hand-lettering powerful phrases on buttons that spark conversations and carry bold messages.

What began as therapy has become something much bigger — giving me hope, purpose, and connection in uncertain times. Grateful to @saaforchange for the opportunity to share and reflect on this journey through your art campaign.🎨✨

Celebrating Labor Day while DOGEd

Last year, I was preparing for two “babies”: my first child and a union drive at USAID. I baked cookies for union coffees, texted colleagues endlessly, and even sent reminders from the delivery room to sign authorization cards.

Why? Because just as I was starting my family, our benefits were gutted—healthcare, parental leave, job protections slashed overnight. I had chosen federal work for stability, but that promise evaporated.

So we organized. We shared our stories, rallied coworkers, and kept pushing even when warned it might cost us our careers. The hardest blow? Receiving a cease-and-desist letter instead of being heard.

Our contract was terminated one week before our vote. But what I learned is this: parents can’t wait for someone else to protect us. Labor Day isn’t just a holiday—it’s a reminder that dignity at work should be everyone’s right.

Out of that experience came the seeds of Pivoting Parents: a community for families navigating job loss, caregiving, and the fight for fairness at work. 🌱

For those of us who have been DOGEd, Labor Day is a call to action. Parenting doesn’t pause for pink slips, and the struggle for dignity at work doesn’t end when the contract does.

👉 What does Labor Day mean to you this year?

Less than two weeks after Trump’s second inauguration, USAID got gutted. A ruthless, messy takeover by DOGE steamrolled any pushback, ignored legal red flags, and shut down global aid operations faster than anyone expected.

The fallout? Already catastrophic. From emergency relief to health programmes to peace-building — the damage is hitting hard. @NPR warns this could cost 14 million lives.

So, what’s next?

No, philanthropy can’t and shouldn’t fill the giant hole left by government funding. But it can shine a light right now. Locally-led, equitable philanthropy was already breaking ground — now it might be the lifeline the whole sector desperately needs.

We know this hit some of our clients and partners hard — either front and centre or in the ripple effects. What’s the reality on your end? How are you pivoting, pushing back, or building new paths forward?
