🧬 We Carry the Weight, Quietly

A Follow-Up from the Frontlines of Genetic Counseling

The last time we spoke, we opened the door to the ethical storms we navigate every day in genetic counseling.

Since then, many of you reached out; not just to share your appreciation, but to say:

“I feel this too.”

“I’ve carried this weight silently.”

“This is why I almost quit… or why I stayed.”

So here’s a deeper truth:

We don’t always cry in front of families but we often do afterward.

We wrestle with words “likely pathogenic,” “inconclusive,” “reproductive options” knowing they’ll land like stones or lifeboats.

We sit in Multi disciplinary meetings where science moves fast… and feelings are left behind.

We get calls at 8 PM: “What does this mean for my next child?”

And we rarely say, “This is hard for me too.”

But we don’t do this alone.

💛 We lean on colleagues who check in after a tough case.

💛 We find strength in each other’s vulnerability.

💛 We advocate, not just for patients; but for ourselves, our profession, and the ethical frameworks we desperately need.

This work will never be easy.

But it can be ethical, empathetic, and sustainable; if we choose to nurture it.

To every counselor, student, physician, or lab scientist reading this:

👉 Let’s keep the conversation going.

👉 Let’s protect each other from burnout by making space for truth.

👉 Let’s build systems where feeling deeply is not a liability—but a leadership trait.

We carry the weight—but we don’t have to carry it alone.
