Next for our FYF series is Sloan!

Sloan is from Greenville, South Carolina, and attended Furman University, where she earned a degree in Sociology. Her interest in genetic counseling began during an internship at Prisma Health. While at Furman, she also studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she explored differences in healthcare systems, medical ethics, and the integration of genomics into clinical practice. After graduating, Sloan spent a year working as a teaching assistant at a private school in Australia, where she strengthened her communication skills and cultural competence. Upon returning to the United States, she joined Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital as a genetic counseling assistant in the pediatric genetics clinic. She later helped establish a new genetic counseling assistant position within Vanderbilt’s Undiagnosed Diseases Program, expanding opportunities for aspiring genetic counselors. Sloan chose the University of South Carolina’s Genetic Counseling Program because of its strong commitment to preparing compassionate, well-rounded genetic counselors and its emphasis on serving diverse communities. As a South Carolina native, she was also excited about the opportunity to return home and contribute to local communities.

September was a busy month for our students!

Our first years spent time getting into the swing of GC-student life, while our second years were off working hard at their Fall 1 rotations. Even through the busyness, our students still made time for some fun at community events, football games, celebrating birthdays, weekend trips, and more!
