It’s hard to imagine that a few years ago I was riddled with fear, swimming only with my head above water. Venturing out steps away from shore seemed unthinkable, let alone facing the deep, dark, mysterious open ocean.

I ’m proud to say that this weekend was the highlight and the end of that story for me. For the last year I’ve been swimming daily and dove deep into my faith, my belief in myself and my mindset. All of the things that Aki taught me during our time together. As he would say, you’re too old for baby steps, just do it!

So I did. With the help of supportive friends and family, I completed all 5 North Shore Swim series events, placing 5th for my age bracket. And last Friday, as a member of “Team Otsuka”, I joined 5 amazing friends to swim 9.5 miles, from Lanai to Maui, aka “The Au’au Channel.” We swam in honor of my dear friend, Curt Otsuka, a man who has heart of gold and truly is an Ambassador of the Aloha Spirit.

As much as this was an exhilarating experience, I can say I faced my biggest fears….
Swimming in the dark ✅
6-8 ft swells. ✅
Sea sickness✅
Strong currents✅
Encountering a 7ft shark ✅😱

Despite all of this, I can say it was worth it! After this swim, I exited a different person, a little stronger and stood a bit taller. It felt amazing to completely get out of my comfort zone and accomplish my personal goals. But for me, it wasn’t just about the numbers at the finish line, it was about connection and love. Love for the ocean, for myself and for our team, doing hard things together for a shared purpose. This was the BEST part and that fantastic feeling of fulfillment lasted long after the race!! #performancemindset!

Special thanks to all my friends who cheered me along the way, Norman for organizing, Jim and the fantastic crew of the Whipsaw, who safely escorted us through those 6ft swells, choppy seas and strong currents for 5 1/2 hours!!Navigating us was no easy task.

And lastly some words to consider as I reflect on this journey…
Follow your heart. Do something hard, something that challenges you, if not for yourself, for someone you care about. You’ll be amazed at what you can do

2 drownings in 1 week here. They were very young children 💔

Our ohana wanted to put a reminder out to be sure to watch one another carefully when we're all out here!

Teach your babies to watch out for one another. Always have a buddy system. Adults you HAVE to keep a constant eye on them! When you're sitting on the beach literally act like a lifeguard and scan constantly notnonly for your family for others too 🙏

It takes a village. Condolences to the two families who's worlds have fallen apart this week. Sending you all lots of strength to get through this tough time 🤍
