DLNR Officers giving Ka’Iwi and her pup escort and protection along the shoreline of a normally crowded Kaimana Beach. Video: Fronting Ocean Safety Lifeguard Tower 2H. As the pup gets more adventurous, there is greater risk to ocean patrons. Mother’s aggressively protect their young. There is also increased male monk seal activity in the area. Federal Guidelines are to Stay 150 feet or more away from a mother/pup Hawaiian Monk Seal. Warning: They move quickly in the ocean and can be unpredictable… for the next 4-6 weeks it is recommended to find other beach/ocean access. Thank you for your patience during this period. Joe Lileikes and Mitch Kam are heroes everyday. Joe is a school teacher at Niu Valley and Mitch Kam is a paramedic for EMS. They are also my personal heroes! I’m alive today because of these two men… no exaggeration. 5 years ago Joe pulled me off the bottom of a pool, threw me up on the deck and performed CPR on me until Mitch and his ambulance crew arrived to continue CPR and shock me back to life with an AED. There are not enough words express to express my gratitude! I love you guys and hope to make a difference in the world and in peoples lives the same way you do. You are the best. NEW MONK SEAL PUP AT KAIMANA BEACH

A new Hawaiian monk seal pup is getting attention at Kaimana Beach in Waikīkī after mama seal Kaiwi gave birth around Sunday night.

This video shows the baby seal playing with mom in the shore break.

Officials are reminding everyone to stay back and give the mom and pup plenty space, both on land and in the water. Temporary fencing and warning signs have been placed along parts of the shoreline. Officials say mother seals with pups can become protective and aggressive if people get too close. Experts recommend giving them about 150 feet of space.

Dogs and other animals should be leashed and kept away. Loud noises should be kept to a minimum. Officials say mom and pup may be in the area for about five to seven weeks while the pup nurses, bonds with mom, learns to swim, and eventually weans.

Please enjoy from a respectful distance. Do not touch, feed, crowd, chase, block, or harass the seals.

This is not the same monk seal incident involving the rock throwing case on Maui. This is a separate mom and pup situation at Kaimana Beach.
