Cpl. Ira Hayes is revered in the history of the Marine Corps; his name is cemented along with his fellow flag raisers in the knowledge books of recruits and officer candidates alike, and for good reason. Joe Rosenthal’s iconic photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima is one of the most cherished symbols of the Marine Corps and the Second World War. Its depiction is found on posters, captured in statues, and on the sides of almost every Marine Corps graduation ring. Ira and his fellow flag raisers became American Heroes almost overnight, with the War Department bringing them home to assist in the wars fundraising efforts.
Unfortunately, Ira Hayes is also a stark reminder of the effect of war on a person, and he tragically serves as one of the most public and early examples of PTSD and showcases the consequences of when our Nation turns its back on those who served it. While there is more written about the Marines at Iwo Jima and the flag raising than one could ever read, not much has been written about the aftermath of the battle and the struggles these men faced.
It is my hope that by sharing this part of Ira’s story, those who may be struggling will see they are not alone, be encouraged to seek help, and reach out to their buddies. If it could happen to a hero like Ira, it could happen to any of us.

In honor of the 81st anniversary of the Iwo Jima landings, I’d like to share my Iwo Marine and his items in my collection. James (Jim) Bradley of Dearborn Michigan served with 3rd Bn, 26th Marines, 5th MarDiv. I’ve posted his uniform before but I recently acquired more information regarding his service so I thought I’d share it with you all. #WW2 #Marine #IwoJima #Anniversary #5thMarDiv

One of the Chosin Few.
From the Pusan Perimeter to the frozen road out of hell, SSgt John Swindle fought through some of the hardest days in Marine Corps history.

His story is now remembered here in the halls of 1st Battalion 11th Marines.

“It’s no picnic here. When you see guys killed right next to you, you get a lot of hatred in your heart.”

Title: “I’m Staying with My Boys: The Heroic Life of Sgt. John Basilone, USMC”
Author: Jim Proser with Jerry Cutter (On Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone)

Unit:
C Co, 1/7, 1st MARDIV
Machine-Gun Section, Company C, 1/27, 5th MARDIV

“I’m Staying with My Boys” is an attempt to put readers inside Basilone’s head and heart. Jim Proser tells Basilone’s story in the first person, a choice that sets this book apart from most military biographies.

The book covers the moments Basilone is known for, from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima, but it lingers on something deeper than citations and medals. What emerges is a Marine defined less by accolades and more by loyalty. Basilone’s repeated refusal to step away from his men, even when the spotlight and safety were offered, becomes the book’s emotional core. He is not portrayed as flawless or polished, but as human, conflicted, and fiercely committed to his men.

It is on the man behind the legend. The internal monologues, doubts, and reflections give weight to the famous line that became his legacy: staying with his boys was not a slogan, it was his identity.

Basilone’s greatness comes from his refusal to stand apart. It is a story about brotherhood, responsibility, and the quiet burden of surviving when others did not. For readers who want to understand who John Basilone was, not just what he did, this book delivers.
