Steel built Hamilton. But can it offer the next generation the same future?

At the city’s Labour Day parade, I spoke with workers and families about smaller paycheques, uncertainty and the pride that runs generations deep in Canada’s “Steel City.”

As the trade war tests their livelihoods, they’re determined to keep their community strong.

How is the trade war affecting your community? 👇🏽

“More than 6,100 administrative and technical staff at the University of Toronto could be in a legal strike position this week after voting overwhelmingly in favour of a strike mandate.

United Steelworkers Local 1998 said 96 per cent of members who cast ballots supported the mandate, with 75.1 per cent of the union’s staff-appointed unit participating in the vote.

The union’s strike deadline is 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, the first day of classes at U of T.

Reaching the deadline does not mean workers will automatically go on strike, but the union will be legally able to take strike action if a deal is not reached.

The union said it and the university remain far apart on several issues after two months of bargaining, including job security, remote work, protections related to artificial intelligence, wage increases and health-care benefits.

“U of T says it will find $20 million in savings next year by not replacing employees who leave the university,” Local 1998 president John Ankenman said in a statement on Friday.” @uswlocal1998

🎒 OPERATION BACKPACK 2026 🎒

A huge THANK YOU to the Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council, the many volunteers, community partners and generous sponsors who came together once again to support OPERATION BACKPACK.

For more than 15 years, Operation Backpack has helped local children and families start the school year prepared and confident. This year, volunteers packed 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies, destined for students at 55 elementary and high schools across the Hamilton area.

Every backpack represents more than just school supplies — it represents a community coming together to make sure local kids have what they need to learn, grow and succeed. 🎒✏️📚

Last week, we celebrated 40 years of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund! 🎉❤️

For the past four decades, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund has put solidarity into action – promoting human and workers’ rights by supporting international development projects, providing emergency humanitarian aid, helping food banks across Canada, delivering education programs for Steelworkers members, and standing with communities through times of crisis.

The celebration was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends and allies, reflect on the Humanity Fund’s incredible impact, and look ahead to the future of international solidarity.

📸 Swipe right to see photos from the celebrations!

Here’s to 40 years of solidarity – and many more to come.
