We just brought a 5,000 lb ornithomimid #dinosaur skeleton into the SECU DinoLab @naturalsciences, where you can come face-to-face with it, without a glass wall. Wondering what it took to get it here? First, a once-in-a-lifetime discovery by an amazing colleague (Dr. Alan Titus); next, two weeks of sawing, chiseling, and plastering (and more plastering) with a team of @ncstatebiosciences graduate students and @naturalsciences staff and volunteers. Then rigging and a first airlift attempt out of the remote #GSENM badlands with the incredible @utahnationalguard; and when the fossil was too heavy for a Black Hawk, a second try with a Chinook by the @nevadanationalguard. A long journey by trailer across the #USA, a street closure by @raleighgov, a Lull lift through the lab's glass doors by @nc.doa, and now? We finally get to start seeing what's inside! Curious like us? Stop by and chat with us @naturalsciences as we expose it bone by bone. Huge thanks to our partners @utahpubliclands and @nhmu, who will care for the fossil in perpetuity. Here’s Falcarius suarezarum for #FossilFriday! This is the type specimen and upper jaw of the therizinosaur dinosaur from the Prehistoric Museum collections. One of the earliest members of a group of theropod dinosaurs that evolved to be herbivores, it is a species unique to our museum! This animal was described in a publication this fall in a collaboration between @naturalsciences and us, led by Dr. Willie Freimuth. 3D reconstruction of Falcarius in the background by Cliff Green. Open access publication available at the link in bio. #dinosaur #dinosaursofinstagram #therizinosaur #prehistoricutah

50 years ago, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act set a standard for our public lands: keeping them publicly owned, and managed for balanced, sustainable use. Most importantly, it prioritized a close working relationship among the BLM, states, counties, and tribes. Coordination like this is why Utah is a leading example of state and federal governments linking arms to get things done.

A Walk Beneath the Big Dipper ✨ A little nighttime exploration at the flooded Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah! There’s something surreal about walking beneath the stars while seeing their reflections in the water. 🌌 #BonnevilleSaltFlats #LandscapeAstrophotography #NightscapePhotography #AstroVideo #VisitUtah

A Meteor Between Two Skies ✨ Recently returned to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, this time experiencing them submerged in water for the first time! Although the flats are typically more flooded in February and March, I couldn’t resist visiting early! 😂 My goal was to photograph myself beneath the stars with their reflections stretching across the water. But the night sky had an unexpected surprise! While taking self-portraits using my camera’s built-in intervalometer, I witnessed what appeared to be a meteor streaking across the sky, with its light reflecting in the water! ☄️ What an unforgettable experience! I can’t wait to return when even more of the flats are flooded. Editing note: The streak and its reflection were captured in a separate exposure and blended with a sharper self-portrait in Photoshop. . . . . . . #BonnevilleSaltFlats #UtahAstrophotography #LandscapeAstrophotography #NightscapePhotography #VisitUtah

WILD AT HEART. FREE TO CHOOSE. 🖤 Caliber, a BLM Mustang who once roamed free, is a reminder that a horse’s spirit doesn’t need to be erased to build a bond. This bond formed from a process of being gentled, not broke. In earning trust, honoring individuality, and protecting the liberty to choose. To follow. To wander. To cuddle close. To be bold, opinionated, and wonderfully soft-hearted. The goal was never to take the wild out of this horse. It was to give him a home where he could be loved without losing himself. 🤎 What if the truest measure of a bond wasn’t how well a horse obeys, but how freely they choose to be near us? #BLMMustang #Westernphotography #GentledNotBroke #LibertyAndTrust #horsephotography
