POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Halfway through the semester in Siena, and my favorite classroom has turned out to be the grocery aisle.

This fall I am directing UT Martin's study abroad program in Tuscany with 20 students. Alongside coursework in wine economics, economic history, and international business, they are doing something most undergraduates never get to do: collecting real field data.

Every week, small teams record prices on wine, beer, meats, dairy and other staples across six Siena retailers, from a discount outlet to small neighborhood shops inside the medieval walls. Student pairs have also walked the streets of Siena, Florence, Pisa, Poggibonsi, Certaldo, and Empoli pricing gelato and espresso to test a simple question: how much do you pay for being close to a tourist attraction?

What they are learning goes beyond the spreadsheet. They are reading labels in Italian, noticing how stores are organized, comparing an open-air market to a supermarket, and seeing firsthand how geography, tourism and tradition shape what things cost.

That is the real value of study abroad. Students stop treating economics as something in a textbook and start seeing it on every shelf and café counter.

Grazie to my students for their curiosity and their miles of walking. Grazie to my home university and colleges (Business and Agriculture) for supporting this trip. And Grazie to our amazing partner institution, the Dante Alighieri School in Siena, who include some of the most amazing people I've met and worked with in my career.

Second half, here we come!

For Week 4 of the Siena residency, UTM scholars visited Pienza and the Abbey at Monte Oliveto Maggiore. Several attended the Minimasgalano (not pictured) while others traveled to Pisa and Empoli for data collection. Week 5 is exams and a much-needed fall break.
