This coffee bar at Bethesda Hospital might never have happened if we hadn’t gone through one of the worst years of our lives.

In 2022, my mom was fighting for her life at Bethesda. This team brought her back. Then came the day they told us she likely had a week to live.

She gave us another 14 weeks.

We spent a lot of time in this hospital that year. We saw the people who work here care for people on some of the hardest days of their lives. We experienced it ourselves.

About a year later, I had this idea to bring Stone City into Bethesda for a pop-up. So we did. And then we kept coming back.

One of those pop-ups happened to fall on the second anniversary of Mom’s passing. That day, in her honour, every healthcare worker got their drink on us.

Let’s just say they showed up. Our little espresso machine basically gave up trying to keep up. Lesson learned.

Somewhere along the way, those little pop-ups became this — a permanent Stone City coffee bar inside Bethesda.

And since opening, so many people have told us it’s been a little glimmer of joy while they’re walking the same journey we once did. Sitting beside someone they love. Waiting for answers. Having really hard days.

Sometimes a good cup of coffee and a kind face seem like small things. But on those days, small things can mean a lot.

This place and the people in it mean a lot to us.

We know the staff love having it. We love getting to serve them, the patients and the families walking through these doors.

We trust that the rest will work itself out.

We’re humbled and blessed that somehow, something good has grown out of something that was so awful.
