Our next open mic is on Thursday, August 7th and is featuring an amazing poet: Holly Loveday (she/her) is a poet and harpist living between London and Victoria, BC. Her poetry draws on issues of class, social mobility, and cultural alienation. She recently completed her MFA at the University of Victoria on unceded Songhees, Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ land.

We’ll have an open mic at 6pm and Holly at 7pm, plus lemonade of course! Bring some tunes and writings or ramblings or just yourself and come enjoy some golden hour poetry! 🌅 A photo of Holly standing in front of a cedar tree in the bottom right. A background of cedar branches sits underneath the text. Sitting at a 90 degree angle in groovy letters reads Holly Loveday. Thursday August 7th. Open mic 6pm, Holly 7pm.

Congratulations to @uvicwriting professor @sean.holman on receiving a 6-year, $2.5-million @sshrc_crsh Partnership Grant to create "From Catastrophe to Community: A People’s History of Climate Change".

This new global initiative will see 27 institutional partners train 500 post-secondary students & professional journalists to share the experiences & wisdom of 1,000 climate survivors.

“Climate change isn’t a threat tomorrow. It’s a trauma today,” says Holman, the director of the project. “And when someone lives through that kind of trauma, they need a different climate story where they feel seen in their experiences and know the harm caused to them will be repaired — both now and in the future.”

The project will result in the creation of documentaries, news features, an anthology & a travelling museum exhibition, & builds on the success of the award-winning @climatedisasterproject — a teaching newsroom founded @universityofvictoria by Holman in 2021 in their role as the Wayne Crookes Professor of Environmental & Climate Journalism, funded by visionary Vancouver business leader, humanitarian & philanthropist Wayne Crookes.

Congratulations go out to @UVicWriting professor & @climatedisasterproject founder @sean.holman on being named the 2025 recipient of the @jackwebsterfdn Bill Good Award.

Presented annually by Western Canada's preeminent journalism foundation, the Bill Good Award goes to a BC individual or organization that makes a significant contribution to journalism in the province, or addresses a community’s needs and benefits via journalism — which describes Holman's work to a tee.

“I’m honoured and humbled the Jack Webster Foundation has, to my surprise, named me as this year’s Bill Good Award winner," says Holman, who is also a @uvicalumni.

"I’ve devoted my life to journalism because of the harms it can repair . . . as the founder of the Climate Disaster Project, I’m working with my colleagues and students to support the recovery of climate-impacted communities around the world by documenting and investigating their stories."

We are so very proud of Holman's continued work and advocacy for community through journalism!

Congratulations to Sean Holman, this year’s recipient of the Jack Webster Foundation’s Bill Good Award.👏👏👏

Holman, BA '99, is a UVic grad and Wayne Crookes Professor in Environmental and Climate Journalism in UVic’s Department of Writing. The annual award honours a B.C. individual or organization that makes a significant contribution to journalism in the province, or addresses a community’s needs and benefits via journalism. 🗞️

In 2023, the Climate Disaster Project won a National Newspapers Award. Judges applauded the trauma-informed approach to journalism, as well as the structure of the project and its many partnerships. They said it was a model of cooperation that can be replicated in other newsrooms as they shrink.

thirteen-year-old abby would never have believed that in ten years’ time, her twenty-three-year-old self would be graduating with a bachelor of fine arts. i spent so many years attempting to shoehorn myself into a stem-shaped box that was never the right fit. i thought, “this is what the smart kids are doing, and i’ve been told i’m pretty smart.” so, naturally, that was the route i followed. uhh… reality check, please! i guess it really is okay to be wrong sometimes. some of the craziest (in a good way!), funniest, kindest, and smartest people i have encountered have been in the fine arts and humanities. as cliché as it is to make a book analogy in this sappy ass post about my writing degree, my time at uvic has been marked by chapters ending and many new and wonderful ones beginning. it is here that i was able to flourish as a creative, reinvigorate my passion for stories, and discover new mediums in which to tell them. i am deeply fortunate to receive this degree, to have received instruction from some outstanding individuals (@ambervisualartist, @michaelchristie, @themockler, @leachwriter, and @leirenyoung to name a few!), to have been a part of the @uvicgrssa & @uvicgrsdepartment, and to have grown into the person i am today. thirteen-year-old abby would be shocked, thrilled, and in awe of her adult self pursuing a career in something she has always loved: stories and video games.

thank you for the memories, uvic. i urge you to better support your CAL-registered students (a responsibility that should never fall solely on the shoulders of an instructor) and to reallocate some funding to the fine arts and humanities departments. we are still here, and we are absolutely necessary in today’s world. 🤍🎓

(final photo is of myself at thirteen, doing what she did best. 📖)
