Did you know Fine Arts offers a wide range of creative electives open to all students in any faculty? And we host over 300 cultural & scholarly events throughout the year — from concerts, plays & readings to exhibits, talks & film screenings — most of which are free for #UVic students to attend?

Enjoy some free pizza & connect with Fine Arts Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator Karla Point + staff/faculty when she hosts the latest in this weekly networking series held at UVic’s First Peoples House.

This event is free & open to all students: if you’ve never been inside First Peoples House before, it’s a great chance to visit it!

The Orion Series in Fine Arts, in partnership with @uvicwriting , is proud to present a free public talk with Canadian poet, essayist and novelist Lisa Robertson. She will be in conversation with poet Rae Armantrout about her new novel Riverwork (Coach House Books, 2026).

All are welcome at 7:30pm Tuesday, October 13, in room 103 of UVic’s Fine Arts Building. Books will be available for sale and signing. See blog link in bio for more info.

Lisa Robertson now lives in France, but she began to publish in the early ’90s in Vancouver, where she was a long-time collective member at The Kootenay School of Writing, and a participant in artist-run culture in the city, writing texts for artists, editing, organizing and collaborating.

She has since been a visiting poet and professor at Princeton University, U Chicago, University of Cambridge, American University of Paris, U East Anglia, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, SFU and California College of the Arts. In 2017 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Letters by Emily Carr University, and in 2018, she received the CD Wright Award in Poetry from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts in New York.

She has published nine books of poetry, most recently Boat (2022), two books of essays (Nilling, 2012), and Occasional Work and Seven Walks from the Office for Soft Architecture (2003), plus a novel, The Baudelaire Fractal (2020), a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction.

Her second novel, Riverwork, explores women’s labour and textile politics on the now-disappeared Bièvre River in Paris. taken in Uvic Fine Arts Building by @uvicwriting

Fantastic audience for “Endings: Encounters With Extinction” book launch by @neil.c.griffin on Sept 23 @munrobooks — hosted, appropriately, by @uvicwriting prof Deborah Campbell who was his MFA supervisor while he was working on his thesis project, which became this book!

With “Endings” (published by @houseofanansi ) already a bestseller, Neil’s yet another inspiring @uvicalumni making change in our world. Watch for him at literary festivals this fall!

Wondering what it’s going to be like to be a #UVic Fine Arts student? Get a snapshot of your upcoming year while meeting other students at our annual New Student Orientation event!

1-4pm Tuesday, Sept 8: starts in the Phoenix Theatre building. Register now for this free session:
https://www.uvic.ca/orientation/fall/faculty-sessions/index.php

If you’re not sure about coming, here’s 5 good reasons to attend:

1) Ask questions & get answers about whatever’s on your mind & get honest answers

2) Learn where everything is: Fine Arts has 4 distinct buildings & it’s helpful to know where to go before classes start

3) Meet other students in your program in a relaxed peer-to-peer setting

4) Find out about your student association & how it can improve your overall experience

5) Reduce your uncertainty & increase familiarity with faculty, staff & resources

Open to all new students in @uvicwriting , @ahvsuvic , @phoenixtheatreuvic , @uvicmusic & #uvicvisualarts.

A few weeks have passed since our last Writers Kitchen dinner but the memories remain fresh. We made some delicious Rice Bowls led by Campus Community Garden’s Writer-in-Residence Josephine Mills, shared some desserts from the local Fig Deli, and had an impromptu open mic with nine student participants! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special meal and throughout the series, it’s been great to connect with the UVic Writing community this summer through food and discussion.

🌸Thank you to the Community-Engaged Learning Office at UVic, who generously sponsored our three Writers Kitchen dinners. Thank you to the UVic Campus Community Gardens for sharing this space with us.

🌟Want to attend more writing-related events this year? UVic-based literary magazines and student groups This Side of West, The Warren, and the UVic Writing Course Union (among others) offer great events throughout the year to connect with the UVic Writing community. Find them tagged in this post.

🍲Love cooking with friends? These meals were inspired by Campus United UVic’s Belonging Dinners, a series of intercultural cooking workshops hosted throughout the year. Registration opens in September through the link in their bio.

🪴Inspired by the garden? The UVic Campus Community Garden hosts volunteer work parties and is a great place to learn more about food sovereignty and to connect with the land. Find them tagged in this post.

Till next time!✨
