As the global demand for animal protein continues to rise, insect farming offers a promising solution that not only addresses feed scarcity but also contributes to a more environmentally friendly and resource-efficient livestock industry.

The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) has a relatively short lifespan compared to many other insects. In its adult stage, the black soldier fly typically lives for only about 9 days. However, during this brief period, its primary focus is reproduction. The female black soldier fly lays a large number of eggs in decaying organic matter, such as compost or manure, which serves as an ideal breeding ground for their larvae. The larvae, commonly known as "BSFL" or "grubs," have a more extended lifespan, lasting approximately 14 to 21 days. They play a crucial role in nature's waste management, efficiently consuming organic waste and transforming it into nutrient-rich frass. The short but impactful lifespan of the black soldier fly highlights its role as a valuable decomposer in various ecosystems and its potential in sustainable waste management practices.

In the News:
'Preserving our biodiversity'
📰
The Ministry of Planning & Development's @eppdtt through the BIOSCAN Project distributed 4 malaise traps to assist in data collection, archival and research on T&T's biodiversity, especially indigenous flying insect species.

🦗A malaise trap is a large, tent-like structure used for trapping, killing and preserving flying insects.

Insects fly into the tent wall and are funnelled into a collecting vessel attached to its highest point.

🍉🍌🍍This research also contributes to food security, plant life and human sustenance.

During her remarks, Planning and Development Minister @pennybeckles said it was important to conserve, protect and preserve the environment-especially its diverse and invaluable ecosystems. She also said if the ecosystem were damaged and destroyed, it would reduce the resilience of the environment, which would result in decreased biodiversity.

Game 1 of the night set the tone for an evening of excitement with UWI and MOB slugging it out in the Bronze Medal Match. The encounter was an even affair with both teams trading baskets throughout, but it was hosts UWI who pulled away at the end to capture 3rd Place.

From the opening tip-off of the Championship Match, it was evident that both MPA and NCA were hungry for victory.
In an intense back-and-forth battle, neither team gained a significant advantage. MPA, however, managed to maintain a slim 2-point lead in the dying moments of the game, which was enough to take the title.
