“My superpower is turning ‘I don’t know’ into ‘let me figure it out.’” Meet Valedictorian Kerlyssa De Verteuil.

In Episode 2 of WHAT IT TOOK, Kerlyssa, originally from Sangre Grande, shares how she entered Computer Science with a background in the sciences but soon found herself battling imposter syndrome. During her first week, she questioned whether Computer Science was the right path for her and whether she truly belonged. Instead of letting doubt define her, she kept showing up and proving to herself that she belonged.

Now, as she explores her next chapter at the intersection of technology and healthcare, Kerlyssa is taking that same mindset with her: she may not know exactly what comes next, but she knows she’ll figure it out.

Between commuting from Couva as early as 4 a.m. and completing 13 semesters of Electrical and Computer Engineering, exhaustion eventually caught up with Cameron.
“It was through constant trial and failure that I was able to grow, understand and improve myself, but I couldn’t have done it without the patience, mentorship and advice of Dr. Radix. If not for her, I wouldn’t have become half of what I am today.”

In this Grad Story, Cameron reflects on the challenges that tested him, the lessons he learnt through trial and failure, and the people who helped him find his way forward. Looking back on his journey, he credits his growth to the support and mentorship he received along the way.

There’s a lot of history tucked inside a cocoa bean.

What started at the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture, the predecessor institution of The UWI, grew into a legacy of research, conservation and innovation that continues today.

Cocoa research at St. Augustine began in 1930, and at the heart of that story is The UWI Cocoa Research Centre, custodian of the International Cocoa Genebank - the world’s largest and most diverse public collection of cacao varieties.

But the story did not stop with research. In 2011, St. Augustine hosted the first World Cocoa and Chocolate Day Exhibition. That first exhibition grew into an annual event that continues to celebrate cocoa and the people shaping its future.
Nearly a century later, cocoa is still here; conserved, researched and transformed into new possibilities for innovation and enterprise.

Now that you’ve seen what started with cocoa. Take a closer, can you spot what else has its roots in St. Augustine?

More than a century later, that legacy continues through work shaping the Caribbean’s food systems, environment and future. What began as an agricultural institution has grown into a Faculty tackling some of the region’s most pressing challenges.

Discover the stories hiding in plain sight. Can you guess what’s next?
