T is for trauma and in case you were wondering… yes, all of those patients were my patients at one time. I’ve seen a lot of traumas in acute care, and at first it really freaked me out. I used to say that my kid will NEVER get to do anything! Now I have it narrowed down to trampolines without tight nets and four wheelers. Helmets are critical. We go places in pairs; no one gets left behind. No impaired driving 🚗
Sometimes you see things in charts and you just don’t understand and you ask the patient… and they can’t even explain it to you 🤷🏼‍♀️ Human behavior is tricky, and one small mistake can cost you your life. When you think about it, a stay in the hospital is LUCKY. An ex fix is a small price to pay in the long haul.

O is for orthopedics 🦴 If you’re in acute care, odds are you’ll be assigned to the Ortho floor at some point🏥 There, you may see diagnoses such as
🦴hip and knee replacements
🦴rotator cuff injuries and shoulder replacements
🦴pelvic and sacral fractures
🦴and more falls than you probably thought possible
There’s a lot of education involved in Ortho, since many times the initial evaluation is the only time you get to see that patient! So buckle up, buttercup— and make sure you’ve got all your learning objectives down pat! This is where that Phys Rehab education REALLY comes in handy! 😉

I can’t help it. I just love it 🫶🏻
I mean, look at my bookcase. And 50% of those were from my BS/MS program @uwmilwaukee 👩🏼‍🎓They were in boxes for years, moving from city to city, state to state, looking for a bookshelf to call home— only to return to the school that they started out at! Talk about full circle 🤩

I’ve been teaching since the beginning of the month, so my perception of time is a little warped!🫨
Today was *officially* the first day of the Spring 2024 Semester, and I was actually in class as a student today📚 In addition to my dissertation research and writing credits, I’m taking a class on grant writing. I’m excited about it, and cautiously optimistic that I will have a grant submission ready by the end of these next 1️⃣6️⃣ weeks🤞🏻 Stay tuned and wish me luck!

Yeah, it really did happen like that 🐉
Seriously though. I went into my PhD thinking that I was going to be the Quantitative Queen👸🏼and then I took two stats classes my first semester back and realized that while I *could* do it, my heart just wasn’t as into it as I thought it was. What I genuinely wanted to research was how people experienced things: their thoughts, their feelings, and how they came out on the other side 👏🏻 Don’t get me wrong, SPSS and I are still friendly (we could never truly break up), it’s just that NVIVO has my heart these days 💞
