At Vaganova Academy of Brownsville, we’re doing more than teaching ballet—we’re creating opportunities that many young dancers in rural Southwestern Pennsylvania never thought possible.

Our students have earned scholarships to prestigious summer intensives, trained alongside internationally respected ballet master Nikoloz Makhateli, performed original works created especially for them, and received opportunities to continue their training around the world—all while growing up right here in our community.

We believe where you come from should never determine how far you can go.

☕🩰 Ballet Tea Time

Most people think The Awakening of Flora is simply a beautiful ballet about flowers and spring…

But the real tea? 🌸👀

This ballet wasn’t created for the stage as regular entertainment—it was commissioned as an extravagant wedding gift for Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of the Romanov dynasty in 1894. At the height of Imperial Russia, Marius Petipa created one of the last great ballets of the Imperial era before that world would disappear forever.

Then… it vanished.

For more than a century, The Awakening of Flora was considered lost before historians painstakingly reconstructed it from photographs, music, and surviving choreographic records.

So when our dancers performed excerpts this season, they weren’t just dancing beautiful choreography—they were helping preserve a rare piece of ballet history that nearly disappeared forever.

Because sometimes the prettiest ballets have the wildest stories. ☕🌿✨

For the last senior sunday, I decided to write about something that has made me the person I am now which is dance. Whether it was the teachers that became best friends, best friends that became sisters, or stories that became memories, each part has had a role in this chapter of my life. When I started dancing when I was 3, I didn’t think it was going to be a huge part of my life. I was just excited to get on stage and show everyone how flexible I was and how good I could dance lol. When I started competing, at age 5, I really started to feel like It was going to be a part of me forever. I loved getting out on stage to dance and just feel the music, because that was my whole life at one point. Around 8 years old, my mom stumbled upon a teacher, who i didn’t know it yet, but would become not only my mentor but my best friend. To Summer, thank you for being the best teacher a dancer could have ever asked for. I don’t know what I would do without you and your endless amount of effort to make me not only a better dancer but a better person. Freshman year I thought it was time to start getting more serious into dance, because if you asked me about college I would’ve told you I was going to dance for the rest of my life. Sadly that is not the case anymore. My summer of sophomore year I was told about all my hip issues, but it wasn’t that bad although I did have to get surgery I still continued to dance after i got better. Unfortunately now I have been diagnosed with AVN, basically meaning the ball of hip issues getting no blood meaning it is dead. So because of that, my dance career has come to an end, but this isn’t about my hip. To all my friends, the best group of hype moms ever, and my pre ballet girls, which are my favorite people ever 🤫, thank you for being the best people and role models in the world. No matter if I was dancing or not, I have always felt the most love from you guys. But lastly, to dance I will miss you most. Even before I first walked into a studio I was always dancing. I absolutely loved this chapter of my life. You were truly my turning page.

I am so shocked by tonight’s awards! I am so thankful for @summerredwing and @makhatelinikoloz for all your support! Thank you @vab_academy for the amazing training!! Thank you @bellarosepenrose for making me such an amazing contemporary piece. Thank you @dcgrandprix for such a fun weekend! I am so excited and grateful to say I have won 1st place 🥇 in the classical AND contemporary!!!!!! Juliette spent the day in rehearsal working on her compulsory variation under the guidance of Nadia Pavlenko — an incredible opportunity to learn, refine, and be pushed at this level.

Every correction, every detail, every moment in the studio is building something bigger. So proud of the way she’s handling the process and putting in the work. 🩰🔥
