🌸 Pas de Quatre from The Awakening of Flora

Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa in 1894, the Pas de Quatre is one of the most recognizable excerpts from this rarely performed ballet.

Created for a Romanov royal wedding celebration, The Awakening of Flora would later disappear from the stage for nearly a century before being reconstructed and returned to the repertoire.

This season, our students had the unique opportunity not only to study this historic work, but to perform it under the guidance of internationally respected ballet master Nikoloz Makhateli.

A beautiful glimpse into ballet history brought to life by the next generation of dancers. 🌸

☕🩰 Ballet Tea Time

Most people think The Awakening of Flora is simply a beautiful ballet about flowers and spring…

But the real tea? 🌸👀

This ballet wasn’t created for the stage as regular entertainment—it was commissioned as an extravagant wedding gift for Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of the Romanov dynasty in 1894. At the height of Imperial Russia, Marius Petipa created one of the last great ballets of the Imperial era before that world would disappear forever.

Then… it vanished.

For more than a century, The Awakening of Flora was considered lost before historians painstakingly reconstructed it from photographs, music, and surviving choreographic records.

So when our dancers performed excerpts this season, they weren’t just dancing beautiful choreography—they were helping preserve a rare piece of ballet history that nearly disappeared forever.

Because sometimes the prettiest ballets have the wildest stories. ☕🌿✨

🎬 Did you miss our screening of The Light of Ballet at the Edwin S. Porter Theater this past weekend?

This special documentary by @speechmedia @sjajanashvili @zkcinematographer offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the artistry, discipline, and dedication that shape the world of classical ballet. Featuring internationally respected ballet master Nikoloz Makhateli @makhatelinikoloz, Summer Reed @summerredwing and the students of Vaganova Academy of Brownsville @vab_academy the film celebrates the preservation of ballet tradition and the next generation of young artists carrying it forward.

What makes this story especially meaningful is that it takes place right here in rural Southwestern Pennsylvania. Set in Fayette County, The Light of Ballet highlights the remarkable achievements of young artists who are pursuing world-class ballet training in a region not often associated with the arts. It is a testament to the talent, determination, and community support that continue to thrive here at home.

If you weren’t able to join us at the gala—or if you’d like to experience it again—we invite you to watch the documentary online.

✨ A beautiful reminder that ballet is more than performance; it is history, mentorship, and a lifelong pursuit of excellence. taken in Vaganova Academy of Brownsville - Little Mozarts by @vab_academy

🌸 COMMUNITY OUTREACH RECAP 🌸

Earlier this week, students of Vaganova Academy of Brownsville had the privilege of sharing classical ballet with our community during a special educational outreach presentation at the Uniontown Public Library.

Through live performances, storytelling, and a question-and-answer session with Artistic Director Summer Reed and ballet master Nikoloz Makhateli, we introduced audience members to the history, artistry, and preservation of The Awakening of Flora, a rarely performed masterpiece of the Imperial Ballet repertoire.

We were honored to serve over 50 community members, many of whom experienced classical ballet up close for the very first time.

A heartfelt thank you to the Uniontown Public Library for welcoming us and helping make arts education accessible to our community. Opportunities like these allow us to share the beauty and history of classical ballet beyond the theater and connect with audiences of all ages.

If you missed the outreach presentation, you still have the opportunity to see these beautiful works performed on stage this weekend!

🎭 An Evening of Classical Ballet
Featuring excerpts from The Awakening of Flora and original choreography by Nikoloz Makhateli and Summer Reed.

📅 Saturday, June 20 – 6:00 PM
📅 Sunday, June 21 – 1:00 PM

Join us for a special celebration of classical ballet and the incredible accomplishments of our students throughout the 2025–2026 season.

Ten years ago, a little girl walked into my life.

Today, that little girl is graduating.

From little sister, to feeling like one of my own, to becoming a forever friend—I am endlessly proud of the young woman you have become and so grateful for the last decade of memories. There are many more to come ❤️

Congratulations, love you my sweet girl. 🫶🏻 @brynnhibbs_ @brynn_hibbsdancer taken in Vaganova Academy of Brownsville - Little Mozarts by @vab_academy
