Saturday, 10/17: Rally and Ride for a Safer Rust Street! 📢 🚲✨

Rust Street and 56th Road are an essential corridor for a safe bike network connecting Ridgewood, Maspeth, Sunnyside, Blissville, Long Island City, Greenpoint, the Queensboro Bridge 🌉 and beyond, but currently lack any bike infrastructure.

These wide streets are often crowded with trucks 🚛🚚 and other motor vehicle 🚗🚙 traffic, resulting in an unpleasant and unsafe experience for cyclists. Existing bike lanes on Laurel Hill Boulevard, 48th Street, and Harman and Himrod Streets simply end rather than connecting to one another via this well-traveled corridor—a glaring missing link in the local bike network. It’s time to Complete the Connections with protected bike lanes on Rust Street and 56th Road!

Join @valdezassembly @claireforny, the Office of @cmjuliewon @juliej_won, and Democratic Nominee for Assembly District 37 @samantha4queens, along with Ridgewood Rides, @transportationalternatives, @ta_qns, @nycbikeandbrew, and other advocates for a Rally and Ride for a Safer Rust Street and 56th Road! 📢

Because everyone deserves safe, reliable, and accessible cycling routes that connect our neighborhoods. Join us in telling @nyc_dot: we need protected bike lanes now!

📆 Saturday, October 17th at 11 a.m.
📍Rally at the Plaza under the Kosciuszko Bridge (corner of Laurel Hill Boulevard and 56th Road)

✅ RSVP to join the Rally and sign Ridgewood Rides’ Complete the Connections petition at the link in bio!

🚲🌼 After the Rally, join Ridgewood Rides for an 11-mile group bike ride highlighting the current unsafe conditions of the Rust Street/56th Road corridor as well as important connections to nearby neighborhoods and the Queensboro Bridge. We’ll gather after the ride at @willowstavern!🍕🍻 (Bring your lock!)

Three feeder rides to the Rally are also scheduled:
📍From Ridgewood, meeting 10 a.m. at Field of Rosemary (by Ridgewood Rides)
📍From Astoria, departing 10 a.m. from Ralph Demarco Park (by @nycbikeandbrew)
📍 From Sunnyside, departing 10:15 a.m. from Queens Boulevard & 40th Street (by @ta_qns)

We hope to see you Saturday!

ABOLISH ICE. END NYPD VIOLENCE.
17 New York State Socialists in Office and Democratic nominees respond to Thursday’s shooting of Oscar Belgal and call to abolish ICE, end NYPD assistance of ICE, and disband NYPD’s SRG:

On Thursday, ICE agents in Upper Manhattan shot, wounded, and kidnapped Oscar Belgal. Wearing masks and construction vests, ICE fired seven rounds into a car, shooting Mr. Belgal in the neck while his 5-year-old child cried in terror. ICE then seized Mr. Belgal from NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital and sped away in an unmarked vehicle, while NYPD officers cleared a path and attacked protestors. Mr. Belgal’s whereabouts are unknown.

Abolishing ICE is the bare minimum. ICE agents are a threat to public safety, due process, and the rule of law. There is no reforming this degree of lawlessness and cruelty. We reiterate our demand for Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and all congressional Democrats to publicly support the abolition of ICE and work to defund and dismantle this fascist agency.

New Yorkers bravely stood up against ICE’s attacks on immigrants last night, only to be obstructed and assaulted by NYPD officers. Jessica Tisch must end police assistance for ICE operations and disband NYPD’s Strategic Response Group—and if she won’t, she must be fired. Additionally, the New York City Council must pass the CURB Act (Int. 796 / Ossé) to ban all of SRG’s abusive practices.

As Socialists in Office, we are committed to strengthening New York’s laws to end all collaboration with ICE once and for all. That includes the State passing New York For All and the Safe Access to Care Act (A11537 / Forrest) to protect hospitals and healthcare workers from ICE. ICE out of New York now!
