“H5N1: Conservation in Crisis” (2025)

On Scotland’s Isle of May, avian flu is devastating seabird colonies, transforming once thriving nesting grounds into a place of loss and uncertainty.

Ornithologist David Steel has spent decades studying and protecting these birds. Now, he finds himself witnessing their decline firsthand. Through stunning imagery and deeply personal storytelling, this film explores the devastating impact of avian flu on wildlife and the people dedicated to conserving it.

Sometimes, what you see depends on what gets left outside the frame…

Looking at them side by side, it’s a reminder that a single frame can tell one story, while a wider perspective can reveal everything happening around it.

These shots are all from H5N1: Conservation in Crisis, a documentary co-produced by Valentin Blüml and Liam Strong.

Happy Almsommer, liebe Ronja! 🌼👋🏽🥰

We’re incredibly honoured that our film H5N1: Conservation in Crisis is a finalist at the 2025 Jackson Wild Media Awards in the “Planet in Crisis – Short Form” category! 🌍🎥

This recognition feels especially meaningful because Jackson Wild is where our team first came together. We met while volunteering, hopeful to learn and connect, and it was there that the idea to form a collective of early-career filmmakers and scientists first took shape. It’s also where the initial spark for this film began.

We’re also thrilled that we can already say that two of our team members, Liam ( @stronglights ) and Ariana ( @biologist_in_training ), will be representing us in person at the Jackson Wild Media Awards.

In name of the entire team we couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity and we are so especially excited to see that the hard work of our coproducers Valentin ( @valentin_blueml ) and Liam is being recognized at this level. They elevated the project idea into the magnificent short film it is today!

Thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout this journey. This is a full-circle moment we’ll always treasure.
