“H5N1: Conservation in Crisis” (2025)

On Scotland’s Isle of May, avian flu is devastating seabird colonies, transforming once thriving nesting grounds into a place of loss and uncertainty.

Ornithologist David Steel has spent decades studying and protecting these birds. Now, he finds himself witnessing their decline firsthand. Through stunning imagery and deeply personal storytelling, this film explores the devastating impact of avian flu on wildlife and the people dedicated to conserving it.

We had a wonderful festival season and are incredibly excited that our short film 'H5N1: Conservation in Crisis' was so well received throughout its festival run.

At the festivals, we met amazing, like-minded people and had the opportunity to share our film with audiences around the world. Seeing your own film on the big screen is a truly fantastic experience, one you won’t forget.

Our film has been screened across South America, the USA and Europe, and will soon also be shown in Taiwan.

Now, as the festival journey comes to an end, we are very fortunate to be able to share our film publicly for the first time on the @terramater YouTube channel.
I hope you enjoy our film. Here are some behind the scenes pics.

Once again, a huge thank you to everyone involved: Liam, Ariana, Adriana, Milli, Christina, Pradeep and Maria, and to Izobel Cope for the fantastic sound design and voice work.
Thank you to everyone who watched, supported and shared the film along the way.

Sometimes, what you see depends on what gets left outside the frame…

Looking at them side by side, it’s a reminder that a single frame can tell one story, while a wider perspective can reveal everything happening around it.

These shots are all from H5N1: Conservation in Crisis, a documentary co-produced by Valentin Blüml and Liam Strong.

Last week, our film “H5N1: Conservation in Crisis” hit the big screen at the @innsbrucknaturefilmfestival — marking our Austrian premiere! 🇦🇹🎬

It was my first time seeing it in a cinema, which made the moment quite special. After the screening, I had the chance to join a Q&A with the other incredible directors featured in the same session. @jdelaproductions

Thanks to @cope_sound for the incredible narration, soundmix and the pic :)

A huge thank you to INFF for screening our film and for the nomination. 🙏
