Mesi Anpil - Many thanks to the staff and community of @ashe_cac for welcoming Haitian artist Saragine Valris - @valsart21 during the BIRTHRITE exhibition!!!
Haiti = NOLA = ❤️
Saragine has two works in the show - Must see in person!
On view thru Sat, Oct 3rd in the BIRTHRITE exhibit, curated by Kennedy Sarrazin.
++++++++++++++++
“Damballah”, 2026
16x20 inches, Sequins, beads, fabric
$450
This drapo painting represents a sacred serpent in Haitian Vodou symbolizing strength, ancestors, and protection. Just as the spirits watch over the living, parents also protect their children with love and courage. The serpent therefore becomes an image of the powerful bond between ancestors, family, and the protection of future generations

“Erzulie Dantor”, 2026
17x21 inches, Sequins, beads, fabric
$450
Erzulie Dantor, the protective mother, watches over those who suffer and transform their tears into strength and hope. Her sword represents her courage: she faces fear and darkness to protect women, children, and vulnerable families. Through her, love becomes a powerful force that defends, heals, and gives the courage to keep going despite hardships.

Closing event Saturday, Oct 3, 4:30 – 7:30pm

Damballah and Erzulie Dantor by Saragine Valris @valsart21
On view April 18 - Aug 1, 2026
“Birthrite: A Radical Imagination of Care”
Ashé Cultural Arts Center @ashe_cac
1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd, New Orleans
Opening reception April 18th, 7-9pm
“Erzulie Dantor, a powerful warrior, is revered as the fierce protector of women, children, and the poor. She embodies motherhood, courage, strength of character, and vengeance against injustice. A loving yet uncompromising mother, she represents independence and resilience.
Damballah, a powerful deity, is revered as the cosmic serpent, creator, and celestial father. Representing fertility, life, rebirth, wisdom, and kindness, he symbolizes knowledge, hence his presence in hospitals and pharmacies, the rising sun, or the matrix of spiritual life.
My Voodoo flags reflect Haitian culture, which has its roots in the deportation of African peoples during colonization. Their beliefs were fused with imposed Catholicism and indigenous Taíno elements. Haitian Vodou structures the memory of uprooted slaves to survive repression. The creation of my artwork stems from my imagination and vision, calling upon those affected to never forget our past and what has allowed us to still be here. This also marks our connection to New Orleans through refugees who shape this continuity of culture and practice.”
