UNE PIÈCE D’ART, UNE PARTIE DE NOTRE HISTOIRE.
Mes drapeaux Vodou haïtiens, réalisés à la main avec perles et sequins, sont actuellement exposés au Ashée Cultural Art Center pendant 8 jours seulement.
Chaque pièce demande du temps, de la précision et un véritable savoir-faire artisanal. À travers ces œuvres, je cherche à faire vivre notre patrimoine, nos symboles et notre identité haïtienne dans une expression artistique contemporaine.

My Haitian Vodou flags, handmade with beads and sequins, are currently on display at Ashee Cultural Art Center for 8 days only.
Each piece requires time, precision, and genuine craftsmanship. Through these works, I seek to keep our heritage, our symbols, and our Haitian identity alive through a contemporary artistic expression.

Today, we create, we rise, we shine.
Haitian art is freedom that never dies. 🇭🇹

En ce mois du patrimoine Haïtien, il est important de rappeler qu'en 1804 --> On a brisé les chaînes.
Aujourd’hui, on crée, on élève, on brille.

Qui suis-je ? Je suis Saragine Valris, artiste haïtienne qui porte fièrement la culture de mon pays à travers mes créations. Je réalise des tableaux, des peintures et je tisse des perles. J’ai une pratique artistique large et singulière.

D’où vient mon inspiration ? Du vodou, une religion animiste profondément liée aux éléments et à l’invisible. Mais aussi de mon père, @georgesvalris, lui-même artiste.

À travers mon travail, je célèbre la culture du drapo vodou et fais rejaillir les couleurs de mon peuple.

Who am I? I am Saragine Valris, a Haitian artist proudly carrying the culture of my country through my creations. I make paintings, artworks, and bead weaving pieces. My artistic practice is wide and unique.

Where does my inspiration come from? From Vodou, an animist religion deeply connected to nature, the elements, and the invisible world. And also from my father, @georgesvalris, who is an artist himself.

Through my work, I celebrate the culture of Vodou flags and bring forward the vibrant colors of my people.

In Haitian Vodou, Agwe is the ruler of the waves and the spirit of the sea. 🌊
He protects sailors, ships, and the living world beneath the waters. His sacred vessel, IMMAMOU, is believed to carry the souls of the departed toward the afterlife — a spiritual journey between worlds.

Dans le Vodou haïtien, Agwe est le maître des vagues et l’esprit de la mer. 🌊
Il protège les marins, les bateaux ainsi que la vie présente sous les eaux. Son navire sacré, IMMAMOU, transporterait les âmes des défunts vers l’au-delà — un voyage spirituel entre les mondes.

This artwork depicts the passage of time in a parallel world, where only nature remains faithful to its role. The presence of the sun and the moon, which never cease to shine, reflects this constancy. The union of the four cardinal points symbolizes inner energy.

Cette œuvre représente le temps qui s’écoule dans un monde parallèle, où seule la nature reste fidèle à son rôle. La présence du soleil et de la lune, qui ne cessent jamais de briller, traduit cette constance. L’union des quatre points cardinaux symbolise l’énergie intérieure.

"Erzulie Dantor, a powerful warrior, is revered as the fierce protector of women, children, and the poor. She embodies motherhood, courage, strength of character, and vengeance against injustice. A loving yet uncompromising mother, she represents independence and resilience.

Damballah, a powerful deity, is revered as the cosmic serpent, creator, and celestial father. Representing fertility, life, rebirth, wisdom, and kindness, he symbolizes knowledge, hence his presence in hospitals and pharmacies, the rising sun, or the matrix of spiritual life.

My Voodoo flags reflect Haitian culture, which has its roots in the deportation of African peoples during colonization. Their beliefs were fused with imposed Catholicism and indigenous Taíno elements. Haitian Voodoo was born from resistance and the need to survive the horrors of slavery. It became a cultural glue, a unique and liberating spirituality. Voodoo structures the memory of uprooted slaves to survive repression. Similarly, the creation of my artwork stems from boundless imagination and vision, calling upon those affected to never forget our past and what has allowed us to still be here. Our roots are our freedom, our strength, our resistance! This also marks our connection to New Orleans through refugees who shape this continuity of culture and practice."

This work pays tribute to Erzulie Dantor, a figure symbolising protection, resilience and maternal strength. Through the meticulous assembly of beads and sequins, the artist weaves a vibrant fabric in which light and texture interact, evoking both the gentleness and the power of this lwa. Each element, hand-sewn, contributes to an intimate visual narrative that bridges spirituality, memory and resistance.

Cette œuvre rend hommage à Erzulie Dantor, figure de protection, de résilience et de force maternelle. Par l’assemblage minutieux de perles et de paillettes, l’artiste tisse une matière vibrante où lumière et texture dialoguent, évoquant à la fois la douceur et la puissance de cette lwa. 🕯️ This piece is deeply connected to the Day of the Dead and the Gede spirits — lwa embodying death, fertility, and resurrection.

Here, around seven candles burn in Gede colors, a number carrying strong mystical meaning.
They illuminate, guide, and create a sacred bridge between the living and the ancestors.

These flames don’t just shine — they trace a passage.
A transition from death to another world, another belief… where spirit continues to exist.

🐍💀 Between light and shadow, memory becomes eternal.
